Chinese ‘Game of Thrones’ fans furious after Season 8 premiere censored
Six minutes from the hotly anticipated premiere of “Game of Thrones” were chopped from the version seen by audiences in China, who blasted censors in the Communist nation for giving them a “castrated version” of the hit HBO show.
Chinese internet giant Tencent streamed the first episode of the eighth and final season of the Emmy Award-winning fantasy series simultaneously with HBO on Sunday night, but a chunk of the episode had been cut.
The Chinese version of the show clocked in at 48 minutes long compared to the 54-minute version seen worldwide.
“I thought the censored version meant only cutting the bed scenes!!!” one angry fan wrote on China’s Twitter-like microblogging platform, Weibo.
“When I was watching I wasn’t even a little worried about my dad being there, even the fighting scenes are cut, with even those cut, why bother watching!”
Another online user wrote: “Tencent is making us pay to see a castrated version of Game of Thrones.”
Set in a fictional, medieval-like world, “Game of Thrones” is known for its extreme violence, gory battles, beheadings, raunchy sex scenes and both shocking and disturbing moments. Among the scenes not seen by fans in China was a character named Bronn canoodling with a trio of prostitutes.
Censorship is nothing new in the country.
HBO has been blocked in China, forcing most fans to watch the censored versions of the “Game of Thrones” episodes.
“It is a bit uncomfortable watching the censored version,” another Weibo user wrote Sunday night.
“If those scenes are not worth seeing, why would the writer write them? Why would the director shoot them? People who like Game of Thrones don’t like it for the **** and violence but for the whole thing,” the user wrote, adding, “ don’t want to miss even one second,”
