Thay also made their own plane, the Helwan HA-300. It is in my profile picture.

Yes. It was the old days of Non-Alignment Movement.
Its later engine was planned to be used in both HA-300 and India's Marut as substitutes for British engines and there was deep coordination between the two countries.

Brotherly planes, designed by two different Germans.

The big difference is you guys went on to use that experience and build on it with things like the Tejas, while we never made any good use of that experience. Shame. That HA was a beauty for its time, basically the original Mirage F-1.

Actually we screwed up.
After Marut, there was plan for Marut Mk2 which was discarded in favour of the Jaguar. Everything gained from the project was put to waste.
Then had to start over in late 80s. It's a shame. But it's sorta okay because planes had gone a long way even in terms of the airframe.

India and Egypt had so many parallels. I grew up hearing about Gamal even though he was long gone.
Even today there are similarities between our defense set-up.
