Worst-ever peacetime loss for Navy, frigate sinks after collision off Mumbai...

In the worst ever peacetime loss for the Indian Navy, the heavily armed frigate INS Vindhyagiri went down in the Mumbai harbour after colliding with a merchant vessel. The 3,000 tonne warship, designed to take on enemy submarines and surface ships, sank Monday afternoon after catching fire after the collision with a Cyprus-flag container carrier, M V Nordlake 24 hours earlier.

The loss of the frigate — sources said a salvage would be difficult as the warship has touched bottom — sent shock waves through the naval community. Commentators said the incident was “ignominious” and had dented the Navy’s image.

The Leander class frigate, commissioned in 1981, hit the merchant vessel near the Sunkrock lighthouse within the pilotage area of the channel at 4.36 pm on Sunday, as it was entering the harbour after a ‘day at sea’ for families of sailors and officers. No one was hurt in the mishap

Not a big deal considering that it was to be decommisioned in a couple of months time and all the missiles on board have been salvaged safely.

INS Vindhyagiri was a Leander class frigate and had no missile armament. While there was a heli-deck and hangar, no helicopter was on board either.

It was family day..and so all weapons would have already been taken out.

true..the loss will not be extreme as compared to a new ship getting sunk or destroyed..

But this is still a grave incident and one which needs to be addressed by our naval and strategic analysts..

how did a merchant vessel collide with a warship.? and where were the officers in the naval ship - when the merchant ship was approaching the warship..? ships are not cars..which can hit each other in one flash of eye..alarms bells should have gone up as ship came near to each other...

and we should speed up the construction of the karwar naval base which will reduce the load on mumbai port

The article does say "heavily armed frigate"

Armament:
2 x MK.6 Vickers 115mm guns
4 x AK-230 30mm guns
2 x Oerlikon 20mm guns
2 x triple ILAS 3 324 mm torpedo
tubes with Whitehead A244S or
the Indian NST-58 torpedoes

well,that's a old ship..
Don't worry,
MOD has to replace that ship with a modern one and with more lethal weapon...

I read in one of the many threads quoting a naval officer saying - the missiles have been retrieved sucessfully, but the gun was unable to taken in time.

Or may be a journalistic error confusing torpedoes for missiles.
