What's new

US okays sale of 8 Global Response Cutters to Pakistan

it is probably to revamp the MSA to due further off shore missions without Pakistan Navy support.

These ships and coast based UAVs and Maritime Patrol Aircraft can keep an eye on the Pakistani EEZ and any illegal activities, freeing up resources for the Navy (the one us OHP frigate was to give some ASW help to the PN as well as a long distance OPV)

A strong coast guard for pakistan is in america's interest, but building up the navy is not a priority

whats the function of cutter & they capabilities?

i second that Question .. :raise:

According to the contract, Pakistan will receive eight 43-meter Global Response Cutters (GRC43M).

Each Cutter will be a mono-hull design made of Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP). Also included in this sale: outfitted eight 25mm or 30mm Naval Gun Systems, 32 M2-HB .50 caliber machine guns, 32 7.62mm guns, eight 8-meter Rigid Inflatable Boats, ballistic/armor protection of critical spaces, equipment relating to command and control, communication, navigation, support and repair parts, tools and test equipment.

This sale will enhance Pakistan’s ability to enforce the rule of law over its coastal areas to safeguard seaborne energy corridors, deter the outbreak of piracy along the north Arabian Sea, and curtail the trafficking of narcotics and other illicit goods. These vessels provide the Pakistan Navy with the capability for medium to long endurance coverage of its 660 miles of coastline. Pakistan will have no difficulty absorbing GRC43M Cutters into its armed forces.

Yup would be used by MSA against smugglers, terrorists and sometimes Indian fishermen fishing in Pakistani seas.

I'm curious as well. What role will it play? What is it's purpose?

Patrol the makran coastline as naval bases move away from karachi. Other roles include interdiction of smuggling, drug's and illegal immigrants.

How many in total?

2 delivered
2 under construction at KSEW and a chinese shipyard
2 planned for a total of 6.

I reported this a while back

Is Navy moving all bases away from Karachi ?
will the whole Naval Aviation fleet be relocated at Turbat ?

JNB at Ormara will eventually be the flagship naval base and most of the naval aviation assets will be based at Turbat. Of course navy will still have a presence in karachi also. The security of the makran coastline will be of prime importance.
The SRC will also be located at Ormara.

The cutters would be welcomed addition to the police role and rescue along sea side and stranded merchants

Look forward to their addition , the interior for the ships look quite modern

While the Azmat class we have is a bit on the heavy side , but these ships are nice to have
for shallow areas as stated by @Penguin

I can see these ships running between GAWADAR-Karachi area

I doubt these ships can handle missiles on it structure , it is always nice to have low key ship that can help patrol duties

The machine gun , setup is ideal for anti smuggling operations
