US Considers F-35 Aircraft Sale To UAE
- A +
The United States is considering selling F-35 aircraft to the United Arab Emirates, which the Gulf country has been seeking for years.

On November 4, Defense News reported that experts and insiders had made clear that the UAE had a continued desire to buy F-35s, in spite of the United States’ repeated rejections of its requests.

“The Trump team has agreed to consider the request,” an anonymous former Pentagon official told Defense News. “It’s not a ‘yes’ yet, but I’m pretty sure it’s going to happen once the dust settles.”

The “dust” referred to by the DoD official would be the ongoing spat between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain, Defense News explains.

The UAE has been seeking a preliminary briefing on the program since at least 2011. But the US has been reluctant to sell the aircraft to Middle East partners other than Israel, which drove the Gulf country to seek Russian military equipment.

Last month, TASS news agency had reported quoting a Russian source that the UAE was in line to purchase more than a squadron of Su-35 Flanker-Es, typically between 12 and 18 aircraft. Russian sources had indicated interest from the UAE during the 2016 IDEX show and talks are believed to have been initiated even before that.

United States discussing sale of F-35s to partners, U.S. official says in UAE

DUBAI (Reuters) - The United States is in talks to sell F-35 fighter jets to partner nations, a senior U.S. military official said on Friday during a visit to the United Arab Emirates, without giving details.

U.S. Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Stephen Wilson was responding to a reporter’s question about the possibility of selling advanced jets to the UAE.

“Specifically with the F-35s, we look at all of our partners and nations and allies and their requirements and here in the Gulf they share many of the same adversaries and challenges,” Wilson said.

“So we look to provide capabilities. So discussion is ongoing now with the new administration on selling F-35s to partner nations that need them, that require them.”

He added, “They’ve started the process. Now with that you need discussion bilaterally between nations ... so further things on that will have to come from the UAE.”

The F-35 is made by Lockheed Martin Corp, with companies including Northrop Grumman Corp, United Technologies Corp’s Pratt & Whitney and BAE Systems Plc also involved.

In a news conference before the Dubai Airshow, Gen. Stephen Wilson, the Air Force's vice chief of staff confirmed Defense News reporting that the process for the United Arab Emirates to possibly acquire the F-35 has begun. He also stated that the Air Force was looking at what partners in the Gulf might also get the aircraft.

From several months RSAF formally requested the F-35 specifications .. this procedure precedes any military deal of course ..UAEAF did it too..So these are the partners in the middle east he is talking about in the above article..

You mean to say UAE is going ahead with both projects. The Russian JV still stands if US agrees?
And this JV will be with Mikoyan because Sukhoi is already busy with the PAK-FA or will UAE take over from India but PAK-FA is not light weight. So it will Mikoyan definitely. And these jets are strictly for Yemen Syria and Lebanon (in whole Iran) Because these planes cannot bomb Israel as it is in software restriction.

Sukhoi have joined the JV too..this deal is with the Russian Arms state company overseeing both Mikoyan and Sukhoi companies..

There are no software restriction, the UAE will get the standard F-35 as every other US ally, and most likely will all the upgrades of the next 10 years.. the UAE does not share any borders with Usrael..KSA is next to Southern Usrael, that is from where the complications arise, but there is a simple solution for that: KSA won't station its F-35 fighters near Usrael..KSA is quite big and has many airbases all over the country..
