RAW is WAR !!!

[The Electronics and Technical Services(ETS)]. The funny thing is if you click on the wikipedia link for this, it says, "Article not found".

I guess the ETS guys believe its better that the thieves do not know where the police is. Go Ahead. Search on Google for ETS. You wont find ANYTHING.

You're making too much of it.

ISI's wiki page is also third on the list :P. These are some basic things that any intel agency worth its salt would do.

RAW has its own cadre called RAS,which recruit officers on deputation from IPS(indian police service),military (navy officers especailly in technical intel),air force (for its aviation wing infact its has a airport at Charbatia,Odisa where mig27 squardn used to be stationed ) and officers from any ohter central govt department including BARC and DRDO depending on its requirment.

Officers have the choice to continue in RAS or to go back to the primary organizations at the end of their deputation.

I don't believe that our bureaucratic RAW is as capable as ISI.

Major Operations of RAW

Creation of Bangladesh and aftermath: In the early 1970s the army of Pakistan prosecuted a bloody military crackdown in response to the Bangladesh independence movement. Nearly 10 million refugees fled to India. The R&AW's Bangladesh operation began in early 1970 by sowing discord among the disgruntled population of Bangladesh (then called East Pakistan), suffering repression by the Pakistani political establishment. This led to the creation of the Mukti Bahini. R&AW emerged as a formidable intelligence agency after this success. The Bangladesh Liberation War is considered to be one of the greatest successes of R&AW to date. However within months of independence of Bangladesh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated at his residence. R&AW operatives claim that they had advance information about Mujib-ur-Rahman's assassination but Sheikh Mujib tragically ignored R&AW's inputs. He was killed along with 40 members of his family. R&AW thus failed to prevent the assassination which led to the loss of a charismatic leader who had a soft corner for India after all they had done for his country's independence. However, R&AW has successfully thwarted plans of assassinating Sheikh Hasina Wazed, daughter of Mujibur Rahman, by Islamist extremists and the ISI.

Operation Smiling Buddha: Operation Smiling Buddha was the name given to India's nuclear programme. The task to keep it under tight wraps for security was given to R&AW. This was the first time that R&AW was involved in a project inside India. On 18 May 1974, India detonated a 15-kiloton plutonium device at Pokhran and became a member of the nuclear club.

Kahuta's Blueprint: Kahuta is the site of the Khan Research Laboratories (KRL), Pakistan's main nuclear weapons laboratory as well as an emerging center for long-range missile development. The primary Pakistani fissile-material production facility is located at Kahuta, employing gas centrifuge enrichment technology to produce Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU). R&AW first confirmed Pakistan's nuclear programs by analyzing the hair samples snatched from the floor of barber shops near KRL; which showed that Pakistan had developed the ability to enrich uranium to weapons-grade quality. R&AW agents knew of Kahuta Research Laboratories from at least early 1978,when the then Indian Prime Minister, Morarji Desai, stopped R&AW's operations on Pakistan's covert nuclear weapons program. In an indiscreet moment in a telephone conversation one day, Morarji Desai informed the then Pakistan President, Zia-ul-Haq, that India was aware of Pakistan's nuclear weapons program. According to later reports, acting on this "tip-off", Pakistani Intelligence eliminated R&AW's sources on Kahuta, leaving India in the dark about Pakistan's nuclear weapons program from then on. :hitwall::hitwall::hitwall:

Operation Cactus: In November 1988, the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), composed of about 200 Tamil secessionist rebels, invaded Maldives. At the request of the president of Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, the Indian Armed Forces, with assistance from R&AW, launched a military campaign to throw the mercenaries out of Maldives. On the night of November 3, 1988, the Indian Air Force airlifted the 6th parachute battalion of the Parachute Regiment from Agra and flew them over 2,000 km to Maldives. The Indian paratroopers landed at Hulule and restored the Government rule at Malé within hours. The operation, labelled Operation Cactus, also involved the Indian Navy. Swift operation by the military and precise intelligence by R&AW quelled the insurgency.

Sri Lanka: R&AW started training the LTTE to keep a check on Sri Lanka, which had helped Pakistan in the Indo-Pak War by allowing Pakistani ships to refuel at Sri Lankan ports. However, the LTTE created a lot of problems and complications and the then Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi was forced to send the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in 1987 to restore normalcy in the region. The disastrous mission of the IPKF was blamed by many on the lack of coordination between the IPKF and R&AW. Its most disastrous manifestation was the Heliborne assault on LTTE HQ in the Jaffna University campus in the opening stages of Operation Pawan. The site was chosen without any consultation with the R&AW. The dropping paratroopers became easy targets for the LTTE. A number of soldiers were killed. The assassination of Rajiv Gandhi is also blamed as a fallout of the failed R&AW operation in Sri Lanka.

Help to the Northern Alliance: After the rise of Pakistan and American backed Taliban in Afghanistan, India decided to side with the Northern Alliance and the Soviet Union By 1996, R&AW had built a 25 bed military hospital[60] at the Farkhor Air Base. This airport was used by the Aviation Research Centre, the reconnaissance arm of R&AW, to repair and operate the Northern Alliance's aerial support. This relationship was further cemented in the 2001 Afgan war. India supplied the Northern Alliance high altitude warfare equipment worth around $8–10 million. R&AW was the first intelligence agency to determine the extent of the Kunduz airlift.

Only Indira Gandhi handled RAW effectively. Rest all the Prime Ministers screwed it.

From what we hear in speculations makes RAW seem like a tool for other agencies like CIA and Mossad.

It may be mentioned a lot less than ISI just because its focused upon Pakistan. Compared to Pakistan's media, India's media is much stronger. Until 7 years ago, news media didn't really exist in Pakistan.

So its only going to be as known as much as Pakistanis drum it up to be. The same is true for ISI, but only that India shouts louder.

Exactly.... Thats y I said it is bureaucratic and not as capable as ISI

# 1 There is no beurocracy with RAW as they report directly to the PM.

# 2 They are as capable or more capable than ISI provided the PM handles them correctly.

even ISI reports to someone.

Indira was a true Iron Lady. With PM's like Morarji Desai and Manmohan Singh, RAW has no future.

Yes Morarji was really son of a gandhian *itch.

But IMO not manmohan. In any case, you wont know how well the PM is handling the RAW, coz it is not meant to be known to public. Even the parliament is not supposed to know this.

Considering the ground realities that there has been no terrorist attak in India since more than a year now (rare, isnt it?) and particularly JnK returning to normalcy with each passing day plus the focal point of jehad/insurgency shifting in pakistani territory with almost 2 suicide bombing happening in pakistan per day, I bet he is handling them well.

Maybe but she created many of the problems that are plaguing us today. Being just iron doesn't help, you need to be wise too.

While I agree on Khalistani's, I dont agree on the LTTE.

LTTE didnot harmed or killed a single Indian citizen on earth until Rajeev played peacemaker and sent IPKF in Lanka.

Nobody dared to mess with India till Indira was alive (except her very own Bhindranwale).

But IMO not manmohan.

Manmohan is a scholar, a good leader but lacks the punch like Indira or Sardar Patel.

no terrorist attak in India since more than a year now (rare, isnt it?)

As per Chidambaram's latest interview on tv 5% of security agencies and 95% of luck is responsible for that.

This is how you respond a terrerist attack by using your intelligence agency.

For such a "premier" Intel outfit it surprisingly boasts a piss poor record in intercepting recent Pakistani and local Islamist terrorist attacks on its own soil. Also if your read the Mitrokhin Archives the KGB penetrated India with such ease they used to joke about it one big Dacha for its ops.

Since their successful operation in erstwhile East Pakistan, from a geo-political perspective w.r.t India's near abroad they have failed to appreciate/anticipate US-PRC approach via Rawalpindi, Burma's shift, Prabhakaran megalomania w.r.t the LTTE in Sri Lanka, Pakistan's rampant nuclear/ballistic missile black marketeering that might have resulted in near parity in those fields and more recently Nepals fall towards Maoism. Not to mention more Indian citizens have died of terror attacks save for Iraq in the last decade.

The FBI's headley case also make it appear the case officers in their Chicago consulate were taken for a ride when a simple thumb impression/SSN though our NCIC database would have given up his case history. The CIA also managed to extricate a high level RA&W mole via Nepal recently while he was supposedly under internal investigation. Color me unimpressed.
