Indians are too smart. There is obviously no benefit in it for Bangladesh.

Indian ports aren't run any better than ours, maybe with the exception of JNPT Mumbai and Adani in Gujarat.

The entirety of Indian East Coast ports' (Half dozen of them) container handling capacity (TEU's) is lower than Chittagong. And not only Bangladesh is developing/refurbishing two newer ports, they are tripling Chittagong's container capacity. We absolutely don't need Indian ports.

It is another "arjee" (request) by Indians to develop their moribund economy. In fact the entire transit thing is also part of it so they can get Indian influence in the seven sisters (who will eventually all be independent countries).

I know they over-dramatize it Bollywood style, but the movements are real. Indians are trying to get Indian influence in these places, but it is too late and too little.

We should not help India transport stuff to the NorthEast. Why should we?

These are backward integration and supporting economies to Bangladesh' development. Why should we shoot ourselves in our own feet?

Bangladeshi goods should go to these states to consume - not Indian goods.

I'm fully aware of the Seven Sisters situation, and in the rest of India. It's a burning cauldron, but it's hard to predict the future.

But, even if they were more efficient, or any number of other benefits, it would be idiotic to use ports of another country, especially when you have access to the sea, and fully operation port facilities in your own country.
Plus, it would be a massive security risk, that country could block your trade any time it wishes, offering any number of excuses.

Yes, larger countries always carry unbalanced influence, that's why it's always a good idea never to climb the slippery ladder.
Keep your distance, maintain good relations, and have a knife ready if they get fresh. It's not a magic formula, just basic common sense.

Only once sufficient domestic capabilities have been built, then no matter how large they are, they also fall harder.

Meanwhile anyone who knows anything about shipping goods to BD knows very well that goods bound to BD are first held at SG, and Colombo port(?) for a month before it is sent to BD in smaller vessels.
If Indian ports are used then goods would travel quicker, which is probably a demand from the BD side but 3rd party/country goods are not covered in the existing agreement.

Not to say absolute ignorance on economics, leverage, connectivity and the importance of transit.

Well as predicted - and invited by Indian trolls, the bhakts are here to derail the thread.

However - the invite for trade is coming from larger govts. in NE itself, not from Bangladesh. Bangladesh ministers are routinely invited to their capitals and they come to Dhaka all the time. Add to that the attempt by the Assamese to economically block Mizoram traffic, and it is pretty clear, who Mizoram would trade with. These economies will integrate with Bangladesh economy as suppliers pretty soon.

All NE states are over the top excited to have Bangladesh as their trade partner. Only Bimaru bhakts have a problem with this it seems (who don't even live in the NE states).

Situation is much More stable than 20 years ago. Infact these movements in india peaked in the early 90s. Since then they have only diminished and reduced to a trickle. Indian army recently pulled out from counter insurgency operations in north east. I do recognise things have changed, whether they have improved is another matter. These insurgencies get hot and cold, but if they are still simmering, they remain a threat, no matter what the present condition.

I also recognise the economic co-operation aspect, but any economic co-operation has to make logical sense. For instance, few years ago I heard an Indian expert discussing CPEC in an American think tank, YouTube programme, that if they want CPEC why not take it through India, that was the gist of his argument. It's was an extremely stupid idea, why trade through a third country when two countries have direct land borders.

I know that very well, mukti bahini did its job well and it fought with grit and determination like any freedom fighting force would, but the fact is that when indian army entered east Pakistan there were still Pakistani troops on the front. Mukti bahini was trained and equipped by india.

I dunno if mukti bahini had the military capacity to fight a well equipped, well trained and highly motivated army with 4 divisions in the east. It simply didn't. If mukti bahini was all that mighty the Pakistani forces in the east would have simply been destroyed when india entered. But the fact is that most Pakistani fighting units were intact and their lines of communications were still open. It was the indian army's strategy of encircling garrison towns that cut them off from their supply routes and prevented them from massing together. A classic example would be tangail airdrop where 2 para stopped the retreat of a Pakistani brigade towards dhaka preventing it from massing and reinforcing the fortress. Indian army bypassed static Pakistani forces to reach dhaka. They did not grind their way through which was a very smart move on their part. Probably the indian generals used their experience from ww2 to their advantage. The campaign of east Pakistan was a brilliant display of maneuver warfare by the indian army.

Chittagong crossed the 3 Million TEU mark a year ago, and your Eastern coast "Dhirey Chalo" ports COMBINED did not equal that of Chittagong. Chennai is around 1.6 Million TEU and the rest combined barely can surpass Chittagong.
