misfortune of Pakistan - Why are we beggers ?

I agree with you.....however many who do stand are killed....simply because the elites of Pakistan have too much power....this type of power should have been destroyed by the Pakistani goverement during its early years of existance...but it failed.

So basically are you saying that whatever initiatives a well meaning citizen takes, it will be a zero sum game on account of the power weilded by the "elite"?

If that is the case, then the situation is far worse than what appears on the surface......:what:

To put it bluntly, its is because you spent your last 6 decades obsessed with India, trying to build up your capabilities against India and supporting terrorism.

Anyone hear remember BBs words, 1000 year war, low-intensity conflicts, bleed India by 1000 cuts etc etc. It was all your official policy.

This is what happened if instead of your own development, you put all your time and money to match up or destabilise your neighbours.

 Indian economy grows so are your poor with double digits. So lets say for the last many decades India is obsessed with its neigbours mainly China and Pakistan and also smaller ones for trying to impose its bullying by spending more on purchasing weapons than spending on millions of poor in India.

India had started the destabilising of neighbourhood LTTE, Mukti bahani and meddling in Nepal, and now even BD

Why has Pak not done away with this feudal legacy?

How can you move forward with this mill stone around the neck ? India removed this in the 50's & 60's. Even privy purses were abolished within 25 years of independence.

Because:
1) we were largely poor when created and had to rely on landlords for continuation of agriculture. The state had no funds. Also India annexed the Pakistani share of treasury which means desperate Pakistan had to woo fleeing princes of India who would look into parting their wealth with Pakistan for a safe passage rather lose it all to India.

2. Many under domination of Pakistan were tribal warlords not willing to accede unless their thrones were guaranteed. This would have created a dangerous situation back in 1947 if provoked. However we are suffering its blow 62 years later as terrorists are striking everywhere. But in 1947 it would have led to our balkanization once again.

Pakistan is a begger because it's institutions are weak and corrupted...by a handful of Mafia type Landlords. When I look at the history... of Pakistan during its early years of existence..its economy was fairly decent and there was potential to be an Asia Tiger...such as Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. However that obviously failed with Marshall Law being installed in the country, sanctions on Pakistan in the 90s, the elites having a monopoly hold on key resources of Pakistan such as flour so prices were hiked up and the fact that the police of Pakistan is at a terrible state.

But I must say oversea's Pakistani's have done a poor job in trying to help Pakistan to stand on its own two feet. The reason is when I look at the Chinese, a lot of them worked extremely hard in the 70s annd 80s and they took there expertise back to China. The Indians are another example of people who have worked hard...yet gave back to there Nation, so that it could develop. Oversea Pakistani's have failed in this regard.

The overseas Pakistanis are willing to comeback and invest in their home country if opportunities are provided and 10% zardari tax is not enforced. During Mushraff era many did come back but with arrival of democracy many fled back to Canada and Dubai. Viva le democracy. The institutions are weak because of rapid brain drain leaving behind incompetent people to loot. The rise military has political elite and collapse of democracy has contributed a lot to destruction of Pakistan. There was a time and need for military dictatorship but their marriage with mullahs and artificially created politicians have total destroyed the fabric of Pak politics. Sometimes it feels that Hillary is right in taking a stick to Pak for fixing its mess and limiting the military.

Man you need to create the competing media so that they dont get hijacked by politicians. In india we have media which has to compete so much for TRP. now government and elites can buy 1 channel not everyone so at the end of the day media is able to report. Dont know if there are something like tehelka and sting operations from pakistan hardly heard about one. But ones things start getting out in media whole media gets into competition.
Please don't quote that ridiculous outlet of propaganda called Indian media. We are glad we are much better off with what we have ignoring Geo which is in wedlock with ToI and Aman ke Asha so naturally influences will flow.

yes..but that mindset was also due to some insecurity of more powerful bigger adversary India, and to rub salt over the wound the creation of Bangladesh

Well in my opinion that is happening in Pakistan...if you look at Punjab its controlled by the Sharif Brothers if you go to Sindh its controlled by the Bhutto family. The Bhutto family enjoys popular support in Sindh not because the population loves them....but because the Bhutto Clan owns much of Sindh in land. As a result the people are forced to follow them as they are farming in there land or living there.

Furthermore I have heard that these same Landlords have tried to keep the population ignorant....and they have done this by making sure the average Pakistani is not educated to a level that can remove there power.

However this does not mean that things can not be changed.....the only way I can see Pakistan progressing is if the Oversea Pakistani's have a more role to play in the country...thus reducing these Mafia type landlords.

Okay maybe you are right..as you are more knowledgable than me....however where have the Oversea Pakistani been in the last 60 years of Pakistan. I can understand Mr 10% as that guy has scared investors from Pakistan....however what about before him.....this is where oversea Pakistani's have failed.

Could be because your leaders lacked long-term vision as the present threats were demanding more attention like Soviet-Afghan war,WOT. :undecided:

@Indian members
No need to bring India into this as their defence spending is not as huge as once it was.
It has more to do with what Tariq Ali said:"Pakistan was cursed with a greedy corrupt elite"

so ur point ? Pakistan should forever live on foreign aid, these American are not giving away $$$$$ watchout for more blackwaters..ur being shackled by the foreign aid..

What made them think of us as adversary. They were one since eternity.

Only this religion bound hate and intolerance for us made them think us as adversaries. We do not have a shared mindset of hate, intolerance here in India. otherwise instead of growing at 9% we would also have been doing some charity trips here and there for foreign aid and blowing up our neighbours high-comission in third countries, twice.

Pakistan's obsession of India has got nothing to do with why Pakistan has not progressed. The simple fact is that the people have failed the country...so I don't know why you got India involved into the equation.

pk let himself to be utilised by others since 1947.they went to u.s,made themselves reliable on u.s.now u.s is properly utilising the pk.

My point is its NON of Indian Business whether we should strengthen our defence or not.

We are capable enough to watchout for blackwater ;) you need not worried

i couldn't help noticing a flaw in the topic, when you say misfortune of Pakistan - Why are we beggers ?. what exactly do you mean by we, if you are referring to a Nation then i hardly doubt that if it is an appropriate word to term the "emotional mob" of Pakistan as a nation. secondly it's only those ruling elites who beg to the foreign governments for financial assistance the common man or public has no part, nor do they get any kind of share. In short, it's all "Them" not "We" there is no "We" in Pakistan.

..... and still India is progressing. Not as well as it would like to but today is in a position to stand on its own feet !

The fault must there fore lie elsewhere.
