The Indian Army has decided to phase-out Maruti Gypsy from its inventory with Mahindra Scorpio and Tata Safari in the race to replace the vehicle under a project expected to cost the force more than Rs 3,000 crore.

The Indian Army is the biggest customer of the Maruti Gypsy utility vehicles with more than 25,000 such vehicles in service and uses them in all light vehicle operations including counter-terrorist and counter-insurgency operations.

The summer trials of military versions of Mahindra Scorpio and Tata Safari will be held in Jodhpur in Rajasthan next week and the winter trials will be held in Sikkim by the end of this year, defence officials said here.

One of the reasons for the Army's plans to phase out the petrol-run Gypsy with the diesel engine cars is the rising prices of petrol.

The Army has a requirement of around 30,000 new light utility 4X4 cars and has plans to initiate the phase-out of Gypsys by 2017.

The induction of these 30,000 new vehicles would be in a phased manner and the process is expected to be completed by the force in next 15-20 years.

In its tender floated for the procurement, the Army has stated that it wants general service vehicles weighing around 800 kg powered by a diesel engine, which should be Bharat Stage III and IV compliant.

Good news. the above mentioned both are really damn beautiful and capable vehicles. But what happened to nissan motors.

u expect india to go for x trail??
it costs more than twice the price of scorpio or safari and on the top of that nissan is not an indian brand....
being indian brands tata and mahindra can offer better flexibility and more choice to us..and of course perhaps concessions..

According to these reports the Nissian X-Trail is in the race:

Indian army set to replace its Maruti Gypsy fleet; Tata, Mahindra and Nissan possible new vendors | CarTrade.com

Maruti's Gypsy to lose out on Indian Army requirements | Team-BHP

but is it feasible..first of all x trail itself is a soft off roader and not as rugged as safari and scorpio and of course far more expensive to buy and maintain etc..
why do u think we will go for it??

I'm sure they'd offer a militarised version of the X-Trail which was suited to the IA's requirements and they'd be built and minted in India so the unit and Maintence cots wouldn't be all that high.

Mahindra's Scorpio. My first choice. It is a real bull. I saw it hitting Tata Sumo(Victa) at high speed near Rajarhat, Newtown(Kolkata). The seen was no less than what we see in our South Indian movies. I felt pity for those poor souls, two of whom died on spot.

Am not saying that IA should go for nissan. i just replied to question that which brand nissan is submitting. And for your quote about nissan, why not we go for that if it really superior in performance than the rest. Anyhow they going to manufacture more than 15000 cars in india completely from the requested 30000 cars. so money or which nation doesn't matters if it is better than scorpio and tata means then surely IA will buy it. they want quality not a fancy indian products.

No less than what you see in south Indian movies? Stop generalizing things and i request you to watch north Indian movies too which are no big than that.
