Iran FM slams global indifference toward Rohingya sufferings

Iran has criticized the international community for turning a blind eye to the plight of Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims, urging the Muslim world to unite in support of the persecuted minority.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif made the comments at a special meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, on Thursday.

Zarif further condemned the global media blackout on the sufferings of Rohingya Muslims, saying “Unfortunately, horrific images of drowned Muslim children on seashores have made no headlines in media worldwide.”

The top Iranian diplomat also censured the international community’s indifference to the plight of the Rohingya and called on the United Nations to focus on the crisis gripping the Muslim community.

Rohingya Muslims have been deprived of their inalienable right to citizenship while facing systematic discrimination, violence and hatred, Zarif added.

He further urged the OIC member states to pressure Myanmar’s government to respect the Rohingya rights, calling for the urgent dispatch of humanitarian aid to the Muslims inside Myanmar and those forced to take refuge in neighboring states.

Rohingya Muslims ‘dying appalling deaths’

Speaking at the opening of the event, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak urged Myanmar to end its crackdown on Rohingya Muslims.

“Many have suffered appalling deaths, and those that have lived through the atrocities have witnessed or endured unspeakable cruelty,” he said.

Myanmar’s treatment of the Rohingya was a “stain” on the 10-member the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN), he added.

He further said, “OIC member states are well aware that terrorist organizations such as Daesh could seek to take advantage of this situation.”

The Rohingya community in Myanmar is one of the most persecuted minorities in the world. Tens of thousands of its members have languished in displacement camps since the outbreak of communal violence fueled by Buddhist extremists in 2012.

Myanmar’s government denies full citizenship to the community and imposes severe restrictions on their movement, branding them illegal immigrants.

Since last October, Myanmar’s army has carried out operations in the country’s western Rakhine state, home to about 1.1 million Rohingya Muslims, following an attack by unidentified gunmen allegedly left nine police officers dead.

In recent months, there have been numerous reports of arbitrary killing, rape and other atrocities against Muslims at the hands of troops. At least 66,000 Rohingya have fled to neighboring Bangladesh in the face of the crackdown.

What can they do? None of the Muslims are powerful enough to be a permanent member of the security council or a large independent military power or scientific and technological powerhouse.

Americans can play the divide and rule game well when you are weak, not when you are strong and united.

How do you unite your weak countries?

The sad thing is, countries like Turkey and Iran often raise their voice about Rohingya Muslims from the other side of the planet where as regional Muslim countries does nothing about the issue.

You are both weak countries and regional Muslim countries are even weaker.

You had at least empires in medieval era, that's why any and every thought coming from your torchbearers are medieval characteristically.

Regional Muslim countries had no medieval empires all they had were history of living in jungles and mud huts. They can only speak and think like jungle people and primitive mud hut people.

I agree ,not only Muslim countries that are busy killing each other but almost no one on this planet has done anything regarding the sufferings of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar .. no one even raise a finger to question what is going on in this country let alone to condemn it ... even the noble peace prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi has shut her eyes to this tragedy .

As far as I am aware of KSA and the GCC has condemned the Burmese government numerous times and raised serious concerns about the situation in Burma. A simple Google search will confirm this. I am sure that it is no different with most other major Muslim countries.

In fact KSA hosts one of the largest Rohingya communities in the world.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rohingya_people

An estimated 400.000 people.

Burma has already blamed KSA and Pakistan for fueling the unrest.

While the situation is sad to be brutally honest there are other priorities in the region where the situation is even worse. Regional countries such as 150 million + big Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia (biggest Muslim nation in the world and the largest Muslim economy) should act first and foremost. Not states 1000's of km away.

Anyway if something can be done jointly among Muslim nations, local as non-local, it would be a good thing and something that I would support. However that is unlikely to happen...

People who exterminated over 1 million Muslims in Syria and over 11 million Muslims turned into refugees, are shedding crocodile tears for Rohingya (about 1 thousand killed and up to 100 K refugees).

Tragicomical indeed and I believe that the Mullah's host zero Rohingya and Syrians in their country.
