Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said Bangladesh has declined the proposal put forth by US congressmen Ed Case and Richard McCormick to assimilate the Rohingya population by providing them with skills and education.

"We said no [to them]. We said Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries. We do not need citizens from other countries," Momen told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs while responding to a question today (16 August).

Momen said Rohingyas should go back to their country of origin for a better life. "The US can take some of the Rohingyas," he suggested.

The US said they would take Rohingyas but they did not, the foreign minister said.

Momen said that Western countries may have the perception that Bangladesh Bangladesh is inclined to absorb Rohingya refugees since they are living here.

"Repatriation is the priority. The US should make efforts for their return to Myanmar," he said, adding that Myanmar is not Bangladesh's enemy, but they have some problems.

Earlier, the foreign minister said Myanmar is willing to take back Rohingyas but some foreign governments and international organisations are not supporting their repatriation at this moment.

"They [international community] think it will not be wise to send the Rohingyas back to Myanmar until democracy is restored there," he told a group of reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 2 August.

Momen said they think there is a need for positive approach from all stakeholders who are working on the Rohingya issue to begin repatriation.

The foreign minister said Rohingyas are willing to return, and the Myanmar government is also willing to take them back.

Rohingyas are Myanmar's citizens and have to go back to their homes. Bangladesh should not give them citizenship.

I think Rohingyas aren't returning so easily! If they return , what excuse for west will be left to destabilize Myanmar?

Anyway in the end American activities will benefit us! In this process America will keep pressure on GoB for democracy! Because without the help of a democratic country ( Bangladesh after Hasina) , USA can't legally fight Myanmar junta! And if USA can't effectively fight against Myanmar, it can't push China to corner!

Rohingya issue isn't as simple as we think! Deep world politics is related to it imo!

Hasina should follow the same path as Khaleda Zia to send back all Rohingyas. Khaleda Zia threatened the Myanmarese govt. that if they didn't take back all of their citizens then the problem would be solved through using military.

I'm glad this hasn't been done. It should never happen.
This will encourage certain countries with vulnerable minority Muslim population, like India, to do nationwide ethnic cleansing with the hopes that whatever left will be taken in by OIC countries.

It’s done actually but not with the last expelled group. The entire situation was handled immaturely by the Hasina government.

Hasina is a monumental stupid. What the hell are the three stooges(foreign minister+foreign deputy minister+foreign secretary) of Bangladesh's foreign ministry doing?

Muslims of India are helping all types of illegal muslims of bangladesh and rohangias to settle in India . Already 4 crore are living illegally all over India , right from kashmir to kanyakumari .
Even an oil rich country like Saudi Arabia is not capable of bearing the burden of 4 crore illegal migrants and you are here to tell us that a shithole like India is allowing 4 crores illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingyas to live in their hellhole.

India is suffering from illegal bangladeshi and rohangia immigrants , 4 crore are living illegally in India with help of Indian muslims , some of them identified and under process of sending back to bangladesh .

India has a big population of 140 crore , out of which 30 crore are muslims, it is not difficult for 4 crore muslims to hide among muslim population who can speak bangali mix hindi . They keep two names one hindu name and one muslim name , some of them even disguise as hindu sadhu wearing safron cloths .
