Indian Army Orders Two Regiments of Akash Surface-To-Air Missile Defense System (Army Version)

Not sure about it, but not certainly only two -

Here it says a squadron has some 18 batteries - Akash (Sky) surface-to-air missile

14,000 crore rupees or $2 billion for some 12 squadrons with 2 batteries each isn't really worth it!

read the first article it says "While paperwork for immediate procurement of seven squadrons (14 units) is progressing at the highest level"

Indian Army Air Defence to Get Akash Missiles, Modernize Older SAMs

The army’s air defence (AAD) wing is undergoing a long awaited modernisation by acquiring six batterys of Aakash surface to air missiles (SAM) and modernizing older Russian origin SAMs.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar is likely handed over the Akash missiles at a ceremony later this month.

Though Aakash is a sophisticated surface-to-air (SAM) missile system, meant largely for what is called “area defence”, like defending Delhi’s air space – the primary work-horses of the AAD are anti-aircraft guns, which are for ‘point defence’ that can move with a armoured brigade, let’s say.

Nobody is willing to put a figure on the modernisation process of the AAD. A source, “The figure cannot computed like that as it is an aggregation of approvals coming from the top.

The AAD at the moment has three types of anti-aircraft (AA) guns, which are all of 1980s vintage. These are L-70, ZU-23 and Schilka. The last delivery that the AAD has got is that of the Tangushka 30 mm AA guns from Russia in 1998. Tangushka guns were meant by the Russians to replace the Schilka, but since Indian army did not purchase the guns in enough numbers the Schilka’s continued to remain operational.

Now, all three L-70, ZU-23 and Schilka are being upgraded with new radars. And the guns are going to be refurbished by the Ordnance Factory Board workshops.

Then there is the very short range, Igla missiles, which reach up to five kilometres.

Army to get Akash air defence missile system on Monday

AkashMissile.jpg

Ending a long wait for a credible firepower to tackle enemy’s fighters, helicopters and drones, the Indian Army on Monday is going to get the Akash missile system, a proven formidable shield against any possible aerial threats.

The Akash missile system will be “dedicated to the Indian Army” on May 5 in the presence of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar in a function held at iconic Manekshaw Centre here, an Army official said.

“Mr Parrikar will symbolically hand over the first surface-to-air Akash missile system that can be fired from mobile launchers with powerful multi-function radars to evaluate and track threats,” the official said. Akash is basically an area specific missile defence system, which have an interception range of over 25 km in all weather conditions.

The Army will be getting two Akash regiments during the course of next two years. The system of six firing batteries is to cost the Army about Rs 14,180 crore. It has already been inducted in the the IAF, which is in process of deploying six squadrons of missiles in the north-eastern region to counter the aerial threat emanating from China.

Both Air Force and the Army have appreciated the system, declining several offers from foreign vendors for providing similar missile cover, while DRDO and French company MBDA are to jointly develop such missile system for the Navy, under the project Maitry.

The Akash is part the integrated guided missile development programme, which has proven its worth beyond doubts. Almost 100 per cent indigenous, the missile system is being produced by the government owned Bharat Electronics and Bharat Dynamics.

Which one is better : Original 1950s SA-6 or 21st century Akash :rofl:

full-30977-49109-23.jpg

Akash is based on a modified SA-6 air-frame - The internal schema shows a different layout with an on-board digital computer, no Semi-active seeker, different propellant, different actuators and command guidance data-links. Difference in materials with Composite technology for Akash including radome assemblies, booster liners, ablative liners, sustainer liners, compression moulded wings and fins. The system also uses different radars and with Aakash featuring an enhanced range over SA-6.

Of course the "21st Century" Akash is better than the "Original" 1950's SA-6 maybe just like China's "21st Century" HQ-7 is better than the "Original" 1960's French Crotale EDIR's?

Akash is not the copy, The missile is solid fuelled with advanced guidance system.

Your technology no one want to buy  Forget FC1? Even Zimbabwe refuse to buy that. You can only sell Russian rip of copies.

At least we're not retard as to copy 1950s tech  for modern defense regardless if we can sell our weapons or not.

Akash aerodynamic is exactly the same as SA-6, changing some guidance program and guidance system doesn't mean you can conceal the fact that Akash is a clone of SA-6.

And how you explain we have a trade surplus vis-a-vis India? Are you saying that you Indians like our fake goods..LMAO this is just too funny.
