Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), the public sector defence undertaking based in Bengaluru, is set to commence mass production of Akash Missile System (AMS) for the Indian Army, a top company official said.

“We are already supplying this missile system to the Indian Air Force (IAF) and recently completed trials for the Indian Army. We are already manufacturing the system for IAF, while the production for the Army will commence very soon and will be delivered to them over the next two to four years,” S K Sharma, Chairman and Managing Director, BEL told Business Standard at the Aero India show, here.

He said the Army has placed an order with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), another defence PSU based in Hyderabad. While BDL will be the main integrator for the Missile System, BEL will supply all major systems such as long range capture surveillance and capture radar, fire control radar and control systems among others.

The total order size of Akash Missile Systems from the Army placed with BdL is said to be in the order of Rs 14,000 crore.

“Our share in the total order is in the range of Rs 3,000 crore to Rs 4,000 crore, which will be delivered over the next four years”, Sharma said.

The home-grown Akash Missile System is the first indigenously-built missile system in the country by BEL. The first order worth Rs 1,200 crore was placed by IAF in 2008 and BEL delivered it successfully for two squadrons. Subsequently, the IAF placed another order for six more squadrons. The production for the same is currently progressing and BEL hopes to complete it during the current year.

Sharma said the Indian Army has already placed an order with BDL for two regiments of Akash Weapon System. BEL will be supplying all the radars, control centres, satellite data-links to BDL for integration on Army variants of Akash Weapon System.

“We have all necessary production infrastructure in place to meet the requirements for weapon systems. In addition, we are creating additional infrastructure for integration of weapon systems in Andhra Pradesh,” the BEL Chairman said.

The company will be procuring around 1,000 acres land at Lepakshi Zone in ananthpur district of Andhra Pradesh. The company is in advanced talks with the government of Andhra Pradesh for acquiring land for the proposed Greenfield plant. The investment on this plant is in the range of Rs 500 crore as part of its expansion programme for weapon systesms. The facility will be ready in the next two years, he said.

The new facility will be a specialized plant being set up for to manufacture all kinds of weapon systems such as fire control, missile systems and weapon upgrade programme among others.

Sharma also indicated that there could be more orders from the Indian Air Force for additional squadrons. However, nothing is finalized yet, he added.

How many batteries are there in an akash regiment?

And these two will probably will go to each strike corps, but one to two more regiments might be ordered since there are three strike corps and fourth one is also being raised. Can somebody confirm this.

Yeah that's why we are the 1st Asian country to send a probe successfully to Mars and that too in the very first attempt:wave:!!We are manufacturing all our major surface combatants at home for quite some time now, heck we are the 3rd Asian country(after Japan and China) to build a full fledged A/C at home and we'll build another two in the near future. We are the 2nd Asian country to successfully test an ICBM and not only that we are the 2nd one in Asia to build a SSBN without any foreign help.Otoh,Pakistan hasn't been successful in building an indigenous corvette even today let alone a SSBN or an Aircraft Carrier:azn:.Heck you guys can't even build a decent F.A.C. at home and has to buy the same from China.Even Bangladesh is capable of building their own corvettes at present and they are going to build frigate sized vessels in the near future. So instead of mocking others you should start introspecting the capabilities of the Defense manufacturing sector of your own country:coffee:.

It is not that you have used your big mind to build things coz you cant do that .. you beg to russia or other nations to teach you how to built it .... so no big deal talk when you invent something ...

You are Biggest Arm importer and this is shame not pride .Pakistan is not biggest Arm improter we build more weapons at home than india does ..

SO once again you don't have any proof but just verbal diarrhea ...... Thanks for proving my point .

Beta We are not blamed for lies but you and your media is .. they lie all the time , now your navy has jumped as well by producing stories that even the little ones cant believe ...pathetic ..........

Still you can't write anything to substantiate about what you wrote about Akash and now going off-topic because you have nothing to back what you write .

So cry and whine more .

we know about your mars missions how it ended up dont open up my mouth and we also knows how nasa things about your mars system ...

YOU ARE TRYING TO FIND WATER AT MARS BUT YOUR POOR CANT FIND WATER IN INDIA .... GOOD

Lol,your SUPARCO isn't even capable enough to build an indigenous SLV even after all these years:omghaha:.Otoh,we sent our probe to Mars successfully and the entire world witnessed that event with sheer awe and respect:cheers:.Your rants won't change the fact that India is a leader when it comes to Space related technologies while your country can't even build it's own satellite let alone launch it successfully in the Earth's orbit:sarcastic:

it is hard to know that india can build anything home ... you are labeled as biggest arm imported in the whole world ...Recently we have seen that your Air Force was not happy about the tejas i dont know why, you need real improvement coz most of the weapons you have got needs massive up gradation and replacements

Things have change now.. New government is determined to buy as many desi product as they can.

Recently Def Minister twisted IAF arm and forced them to take LCA-SP1. IAF wanting all 8 LCAs together by Dec 2015, But Def minitster forced them to take one by one (as they are cm)...

India imports 45% of it's defense hardware rest 55% is Made in India.
India's Defence Indigenization Rises from 30% to 55% in 2014!

As far as the Tejas is concerned - IAF is pretty clear about it - We have no doubts on Tejas’ capabilities: IAF Chief | idrw.org

When did Pakistan have its own SAM let alone a better one?

Before India, China was consecutively ranked World's biggest Arms Importer - Right now its #3 - and Pakistan has been ranked consecutively ranked in the list as well - right now at #5 - So what is ailing Pakistan to become the world's largest arms importer - its economy! If you have the bucks you will buy for sure but that is not the case with the poor state of your economy. While India can very well affoprt those imports - Pakistan can't! As simple as that.

One regiment is equal to 5 or 6 squadrons and One squadron is equal to some 14 batteries or some 48-125 missiles.

Not sure about the army but six Akash surface-to-air missile (SAM) squadrons are to be deployed in the northeast by IAF.

India’s first homegrown fighter, the Tejas light combat aircraft, will finally be delivered next month, 30 years after it was conceived. But senior air force officers privately said they were unimpressed, with one former officer, an ex-fighter pilot, saying the plane was “so late it is obsolete”.

read this out one of the article from your media has got this and it further says

“It could lead to humiliation at the hands of our neighbours,” AK Sachdev, a retired air force officer, wrote last year in the Indian Defence Review journal
