NEW DELHI: A decade old ban on Pakistani public and private television channels in India is due for a review, thanks to the efforts of Pakistan Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbass Jilani’s strong pitch last week, the Times of India reported on Saturday.

According to the report, Jilani had said that all Indian channels were freely available in Pakistan and Islamabad has done nothing to impose restrictions on their telecast, and the measure must be reciprocated for Pakistani channels in India during talks between the two countries last week.

The Pakistani delegation went on to make a case that if India wants to burgeon people-to- people contacts, it must allow Pakistani channels into Indian homes.

The point seemed to hit home as the Indians “conveyed to them (Pakistan) that India will look positively at the proposal although the matter will have to be first discussed by the information and broadcasting ministry and its counterpart in Pakistan,” said a source, adding that PTV’s “anti-India” campaign in the past over internal issues, including Jammu and Kashmir, has been a concern.

In 2009, the Senate’s standing committee on information and broadcasting appealed to the Indian Parliament to ensure airing of Pakistani channels in India. The same Senate next year asked Pakistani cable operators to stop airing Indian TV channels citing “cultural invasion”. But with people-to-people contacts finding favour, the Pakistani request might fall on more receptive ears in New Delhi.

Both neighbours will look to seal further cultural cooperation by signing an MoU for promotion of arts and culture when Indian foreign minister S M Krishna visits Pakistan in September.

During the talks, both sides are believed to have underlined the importance of greater people-to-people contacts and friendly exchanges in building “a relationship of trust and friendship between the two countries”. These exchanges, they believed can lead to “cessation of hostile propaganda against each other”.

Ban if present should not be lifted. Channels which preach hatred towards Hindus are aired in Pakistan..., these will cause pain to hindus and hence should not be shown..

One or two standard news channels which are careful enough not to air sensitive issues are welcome ..

lol indians badly need to open eye & see the whole world it will really help indian society instead of assuming tht every one hates india/hindus, just see wht the whole world has to offer....

nyways good democracy:D

soo tht is called free speech & democracy in india:D??

indians r full of inferiority complex

about religion skin colour culture n many many things :D

I think bans of Pakistani TV channels in India is actually a good thing for Pakistanis.

Can you imagine how anti-Pakistan the common Indian will get if they see what people like Zaid Hamid says about Hindus? Or Sohail Tanveer's beautiful views on Hindu zehniyat? Or how some of these "defence analysts" talk about their favourite Hindu phrase "Muh me Ram Ram, bagal mein chura".

Its best the ban is kept in place at least until the Pakistani media gets more matured and civilized, or there will be even more enemity between Indians and Pakistanis, as if it is not bad already :hang2:

how funny tht mighty india:D is scared of alternative viewpoints and the brainless indians believe whatever their govt feeds them....

They think whole Pakistani media revolve arround Zaid Hamid & intrestingly majority of Pakistanis dont even watch his programmes & non of the major tv channels have his programmes...

@mr javed
If you are free to dress whatever way you want that does not mean you go naked infront of everyone ..

We are only concerned about Pakistan. There is no ban on non-Pak foreign channels in India.

There is a difference b/n free speech and hate speech.

Good to know..but there are perceptions just like you Pakistanis assume that Shiva Sena is ruling India while its nothing more than a regional party based in Mumbai.

congress is on self destruction mode or they have find some way to get Hindu vote by dividing them and now focusing more and more on Muslim vote...

Entertainment channels are welcome but as of now Pak news channels is a strict no -no.

it seems this is the only case & this is wht Pakistan govt & peoples want i guess it will definetely help indians to see what Pakistan really is through our entertainment channels....

i have only one querry where are those indians who always said tht there is no ban on Pakistani tv channels :D??

Let me tell you if India allows Pakistani news channels trust me Indians will find more partners in their propaganda against Pakistan although your Indian masala news channels will have a break therefor i believe your Media will not let Indian govt to allow Pakistani news channels.

Our media is much much liberal in criticising our own country and bring its ills infront of people
