China - Uighur teenager handed death sentence over ethnic riots

A 19-year-old Uighur woman has been handed a suspended death sentence on charges of taking part in deadly ethnic riots in western China in 2009 - the second woman to receive the death penalty for the unrest.

Radio Free Asia said Pezilet Ekber was working as a saleswoman at a shop in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang region, when riots broke out between the Turkic-speaking Muslim Uighur minority and Han Chinese on July 5, 2009. The riots left nearly 200 people dead and were the most serious outbreak of violence in Xinjiang in years.

The report cited a letter from a classmate of the woman as saying Miss Ekber was sentenced to death in April last year with a two-year reprieve by the Urumqi Intermediate People's Court. Such punishments are usually commuted to life in prison.

Officials at the court and the regional government either refused to comment or said no one was available to do so. The RFA report, published on Friday, did not give details of the charges against Ekber.

News about court cases in Xinjiang has only trickled out at times, as the government controlled the flow of information in an apparent bid to limit any public reactions.

China has sentenced dozens of people for their involvement in the riots, most of them Uighurs.

China has blamed the rioting on overseas-based groups agitating for broader rights for Uighurs in Xinjiang. Ethnic tensions have simmered for years, with many Uighurs resentful of Beijing's heavy-handed rule. China says it respects minority rights and has boosted living standards and economies in areas such as Xinjiang.

China handed a 19-year-old Uighur woman a suspended death sentence on charges of taking part in deadly ethnic riots in Uighur region in 2009.

Pezilet Ekber became the second Uyghur woman to receive the death penalty in connection to the unrest.

Another woman was executed by Chinese authorities earlier this year. US-funded broadcaster Radio Free Asia said Ekber was working as a saleswoman at a shop in Urumqi, the capital of the region, when protests broke out between the Turkic-speaking Muslim Uighur locals and Han Chinese on July 5, 2009.

China tried 376 defendants in 2010 for Xinjiang unrest

(Reuters) - Courts in China's far western region of Xinjiang tried 376 people last year for "crimes against national security" and their involvement in violence that left at least six dead, the People's Daily website said, citing a high court official.

Six people died and 15 were injured last August after a deadly attack on Chinese military police in restive Xinjiang -- long the scene of ethnic tension and violence.

"The people's courts at all various levels in Xinjiang will put the crackdown on terrorism as its top priority for the criminal courts," Rozi Simayi, president of the supreme people's court in Xinjiang was quoted by the website as saying late on Sunday.

Beijing often blames what it calls three forces of religious extremism, ethnic separatism and international terrorism in Xinjiang for attacks on police or other government targets, saying they work with al Qaeda or Central Asian militants to bring about an independent state called East Turkestan.

But Uighur exiles accuse China of whipping up the threat posed by armed separatists to justify harsh crackdowns in Xinjiang.

Many Uighurs -- a Muslim, Turkic-speaking people native to the region -- chafe under rule from Beijing and restrictions on their language, culture and religion.

They now make up less than half of Xinjiang's population after decades of immigration by the ethnic Han majority who transfer from other parts of China.

In July 2009, nearly 200 people died in violence that exploded across Xinjiang's regional capital, Urumqi, after a protest by the minority Turkic Uighurs, who have called the region home for centuries but fear they are being marginalised by Han Chinese.

Han Chinese launched revenge attacks two days later.

Don't troll plz...

1#, They violated the law. They killed people, so the death penalty.

2#, The contradiction between Uighur and Han nationality has nothing to do with religion.
Xinjiang: 13 million the Han, 9.6 million Uighur, 1.5 million Kazakhs, 1 million Hui.
Kazak and Hui also are the Muslims, a good relationship with them and the Han.
Kazak and Hui, a bad relationship with them and uighurs.
Part of the Han Chinese also is Muslim...

3#, The Northern Xinjiang's Uygur and the Han have a good relationship.
2009, riots Uighurs, Those Uighurs come from the southern Xinjiang.

Maybe you don't know, Vice Chairman of National People's Congress(Equivalent Deputy Speaker of Parliament)---Ismail Amat is the Uighur.

Obviously highest officer in Xinjiang should be Uighur how does it change the case of killing and suppressing Uighur Muslims.

If u apply that theory then Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister always been a Kashmiri or our Vice President is a Muslim or Defense Minister is Christian or Prime Minister is Sikh.

Still many pakistani rant and call India = Hindu.

That is your problem. Part of the Chinese people even think that all Indians are Buddhists.
Is there a lot of Chinese people talk to India and Hinduism? No, Almost none, as long as you do not anger them.
We are not interested in religious issues of India. Chinese people only care about their friends---Pakistan.
Pakistan did not betray China, 1989. So we will not betray Pakistan.

For India and Pakistan, May be religious issues.
For Chinese, That is friendship issues.
We will always support Pakistan, Whether it is to do something. India should resolve the problem through Pakistan, not China.
