China hikes defence budget to $115.7 billion

In last 10 years China has commissioned maximum number of modern fighters, bombers, transport, trainers,AWACS,AC Refuelers, Corvette,Frigates, Destroyers,LPD's and AC carrier. The induction process is extremely fast and surprisingly all the projects are maturing on-time or even before barring the Jet engines.

Well considering their mammoth sized defense budget, it should be fast and on time. Still i think fighters like A-5 are very obsolete are not good for Chinese Air defense and there is also some old lingering subs and combatant ships. Considering their pace they will gone soon in next couple of years.

By % GDP -wise, are we spending an outrageous number?

BEIJING: China on Tuesday hiked its defence budget by 10.7 per cent to USD 115.7 billion, well above this year's Indian defence spending of USD 37.4 billion.

The hike in the defence spending was announced as the Chinese legislature, the National People's Congress (NPC) opened its annual session, which this year also marks the once-in-a-decade power transfer.

As per the budgetary papers placed at the NPC, a sum of 720.168 billion Yuan was allocated for defence, which at the current exchange rate amounted to USD 115.7 billion.

The newly elected leader Xi Jinping and his fellow leaders would formally take over power from old guard headed by President Hu Jintao in the course of next ten days.

The budget proposals were announced by the outgoing Premier Wen Jiabao who presented a lengthy work report on the decade old achievements of his government.

The focus was mainly on the defence budget as China had officially allocated USD 106.4 billion last year making it one of the top defence spenders in the world.

The 10 per cent hike this year comes when China is rapidly modernising its armed forces in the back drop of deepening stand off with Japan over the disputed islands as well as differences with several South Asian Countries over the South China Sea.

China has already launched its first aircraft carrier last year as well as several versions of new jet fighters including a stealth fighter bracing to deal with big US military push into Asia pacific.

Playing down the steady increase in China's defence budget, NPC spokesperson Fu Ying told a media on Monday that China defencive military policies played a "core role" in maintaining peace and stability in Asia.

"China's peaceful foreign policies and its defencive military policies are conducive to security and peace of Asia," Fu said.

"It's not good news to the world that a country as large as China is unable to protect itself," Fu said.

Acknowledging that China's rise raised concerns in Japan and other countries, Fu said Beijing beefed up its maritime security and opted to send its ships to patrol the waters of disputed islands in East China Sea after Japan violated consensus agreement and purchased them from private parties.

"When some countries make provocation, we should make resolute response and handle these matter in timely manner to send clear signal," she said.

Fu said compared with many other parts of the world, Asia has been largely peaceful after the end of the Cold War, which created a favourable environment for development.

"That is why Asia is so attractive now," she added.

Instead of useless admiration of China, we need to boost our own infrastructure preparation on LAC.
Useless admiration of China ? Where did I admire that ? I just said its perfectly rational to build their military as they want to become a super power and considering their economy, they invest less than us. Our defense budget is 1/3 of theirs and look at their economy size compared to us.

India have problems with China and Pakistan. They have to face US, Japan, ROK and many other countries. Tell me how am I wrong ? Wouldn't we have done the same in their situation ? Aren't we doing the same ?

This is only the official budget. Experts say that real budget is much much higher which is expected from a country set to dominate and working for the stability and prosperity of IOR, S.china sea and asia as a whole. :)

that is the norm of disclosure of defence budget around the world. it is for one's national security.

China will probably be an economy in excess of 100 trillion yuan by 2017。

Having a defence budget accounting for 2% of the GDP will give a figure of 2 trillion yuan, tripling today‘s 6402 billion。

So way to go。

a staggering 21% increase!

what are those as % of your government's fiscal budget!?
No clue. I googled the numbers. Actually VN´s defence spending is top secret.

Sure, China defence budget is destined for peace and prosperity for all of us. And the defence minister of China is St Nicholas.

:hitwall:

Yeah, we gonna spend a lot on these babies, but it ain't gonna count on the official defence budget. :coffee:

Every country has right to protect itself from Enemies so they can spend how much there need is no need to burn indi members:whistle:.Way to go China

Yups, you need to spend more on Engine development. That's the last frontier you guys need to master, and then recoup the R&D costs by flooding the market with reliable and reasonably priced products. Btw, other than jets, what's your status and reliability of standard engines on helis etc etc -- you importing or manufacturing yourself?

Higher then this last year 120 billion, but western intelligence stated could be between 150 to 180 billion. More should be spent on R&D overcome the area's where China is behind on, recent increase in engine development is a good start.

The WZ-9 turboshaft is home built problem is it is a lower powered engine, the better engine the WZ16 is being built and tested for a heavy WZ10 like the Apache. Heli's are one of the area's where China has a weakness in I would say, had to buy the mi17's but those will not be needed once the Z20 is inducted.
