BEIJING: China on Tuesday hiked its defence budget by 10.7 per cent to USD 115.7 billion, well above this year's Indian defence spending of USD 37.4 billion.

The hike in the defence spending was announced as the Chinese legislature, the National People's Congress (NPC) opened its annual session, which this year also marks the once-in-a-decade power transfer.

As per the budgetary papers placed at the NPC, a sum of 720.168 billion Yuan was allocated for defence, which at the current exchange rate amounted to USD 115.7 billion.

The newly elected leader Xi Jinping and his fellow leaders would formally take over power from old guard headed by President Hu Jintao in the course of next ten days.

The budget proposals were announced by the outgoing Premier Wen Jiabao who presented a lengthy work report on the decade old achievements of his government.

The focus was mainly on the defence budget as China had officially allocated USD 106.4 billion last year making it one of the top defence spenders in the world.

The 10 per cent hike this year comes when China is rapidly modernising its armed forces in the back drop of deepening stand off with Japan over the disputed islands as well as differences with several South Asian Countries over the South China Sea.

China has already launched its first aircraft carrier last year as well as several versions of new jet fighters including a stealth fighter bracing to deal with big US military push into Asia pacific.

Playing down the steady increase in China's defence budget, NPC spokesperson Fu Ying told a media on Monday that China defencive military policies played a "core role" in maintaining peace and stability in Asia.

"China's peaceful foreign policies and its defencive military policies are conducive to security and peace of Asia," Fu said.

"It's not good news to the world that a country as large as China is unable to protect itself," Fu said.

Acknowledging that China's rise raised concerns in Japan and other countries, Fu said Beijing beefed up its maritime security and opted to send its ships to patrol the waters of disputed islands in East China Sea after Japan violated consensus agreement and purchased them from private parties.

"When some countries make provocation, we should make resolute response and handle these matter in timely manner to send clear signal," she said.

Fu said compared with many other parts of the world, Asia has been largely peaceful after the end of the Cold War, which created a favourable environment for development.

"That is why Asia is so attractive now," she added.

That is only the official budget too. :D

When you account for the rest of the expenditure that is not included under official defence spending, you get a much larger number.

And because we are a developing country, that money goes a lot further than it would in a developed country.

We aim to be one of the major powers in a multipolar world, we don't want to be in anyone's camp. That means we have to build up significant military strength, that is more fitting to our place in the world.

Higher then this last year 120 billion, but western intelligence stated could be between 150 to 180 billion. More should be spent on R&D overcome the area's where China is behind on, recent increase in engine development is a good start.

The reported figure covers only spending on defence by the central government。Local governments at various levels spend some 20 billion yuan a year。Hence the total is 7406.22 yuan as clearly shown below in the buget paper:

:coffee:

in 2013, defence budget is 720.2billion RMB(115.7billion $), GDp of China in 2012 is 52trillion RMB(8.3trillion $), only 1.385% of 2012's GDP, even less if compared with 2013's GDP; education budget 2.3 trillion RMB(370billion $), 4.4% of 2012's GDP

China's GDP is more than 53% of US, but only 18% of US's defence budget

A small sum of defense budget indeed. the above indian article is making a big fuss over it. We are not comparing with india. no need to!

When you are trying to make a comparison, compare our budget with the equivalent of USA, NATO, Japan separately or in total. We have a long border, coastline, numerous islands and a vast piece of land to cover.

The soldiers and the R and D people deserve a good raise!

The money could be used to uplift millions of people still struck in poverty

JUST KIDDING

Great development we need a strong millitary power in Asia

Way to go China. China needs to retire old military equipment to compete with world powers.

Both in 2012,

China defence budget is $106.4 billion
GDP is $8.3 trillion
Government revenue 15 trillion RMB? ( $2.4 trillion)
Total Government Revenue May Reach 15 Trillion Yuan in 2012 - Economic Observer Online - In-depth and Independent
So China spend 1.28% of GDP, or 4.4% of government revenue in defence budget.

India defence budget is $37.4 billion
GDP is $1.7 trillion
Government revenue is $220 billion
So India spend 2.2% of GDP, or 17% of government revenue in defence budget.

Then who is kidding?
