Bangladesh war: The article that changed history

Urdu was an amalgam language that took its genesis in what was the Northern Part of Undivided India centered around Delhi. The Muslims who migrated to Pakistan post-partition took that language with them. Needless to say, it went in the luggage of the 'Mohajirs' which in turn caused stresses in Karachi whose original inhabitants spoke Sindhi, and to alesser extent in West Punjab. But Jinnah was insistent that Urdu must prevail over all regional languages; which in turn led to the 'Language riots' in East Bengal. Then, the rest is History....... which was well-documented by great journalists such as Anthony Mascarenhas.

British replaced Persian with Urdu long before partition, so Urdu was already being used in all provinces of Pakistan (West Pakistan at that time) except Sindh. So, Muslim migrated to Pakistan brought language with them part is only true for Sindh not whole Pakistan.

And those who pole vaulted!

Fi amanillah. We cant save all. BD will be doomed for unnecessarry love. If we say them as ours. We will have to take more from India and Myanmar. So we will assume them as razakar. Our concern is people inside BD territory. We will be able to reproduce enough when we will be able save existing Bangladeshis of BD.

 swimming is a must to join the army..

As for better ppl 92% Pakistanis are bilingual or trilingualllllzzzzz.. Urdu is our national language apart from our local languages/mother tongues.

In Indonesia is a must (in Singapore, Malaysia and Japan is too), you must be tested in swimming test before joining the Army. When you see the geographical and condition of every country in this world is vastly differ from each other so is the requirement for every of their Armies....

I don't think swimming is mandatory for our armed forces

Swimming is a requirement for BD army. Most Bengali kids can swim as you can guess because of our geography.

Those banglis were pole vaulters who kept coming till Pak-indian border wasn't fenced and all -- that's the 90s!

The loyal Pakistani Bangalis came before or during 71.. An many of them also served the Pak Army and remained loyal to the fatherland till the end.

As for non bangali bangladeshis .. Sure I wouldn't mind swapping 2+ million illegal bangladeshis in Pak for them.. They are still suffering and our hearts bleed for them!
but Bangladesh was born in 1947 to accommodate those non-Bengali Muslims too. the fascist ethnocentric system of Bangladesh today cannot be an excuse to take out the very people the country started to exist for. the only people who really need to leave Bangladesh are those who call the 1971 Indian invasion as their "getting independence".

there was no language riot in 1950s East Bengal. a few anti-Muslim bigots demonstrating against Urdu/for Sanskrit-Bengali does not amount to a riot. and Anthony Mascarenhas did not cover such things in the 1950s. and Urdu has been a language of Bengal for a long time with particular prevalence among the educated class.

When did the Language Riots take place, miah? Anthony Mascarenhas is known for his coverage of the Genocide in East Bengal, in case you did not notice. Though he was very much alive when the Language Riots took place.

As for Urdu in East Bengal; it was the language of the Feudals and the Courtiers of the Sultans. The common Chashas and Majhis did not speak Urdu. That effort to impose the language upon them by Jinnah and the GoP was the genesis of the birth of Bangladesh.

Brush up on your history....... :D

it's like you have just learned about this person Anthony Mascheranas and now randomly throwing it in random topics. Anthony Mascheranas is as relevant here as Michael Jackson is.

since i'm originally from east bengal, it should not be surprising that i personally have agricultural background in my recent family history, whether a landowning or peasantry background. you basically agree with me that Urdu was either a mother tongue or a second language of many of the educated/elites of the society. it was not as common among peasant class. that said, the Muslim society in the region has had a lot of social mobility affected by many factors.
That effort to impose the language upon them by Jinnah and the GoP was the genesis of the birth of Bangladesh.
actually 'Jinnah and GoP' tried to impose meat on us vegetarian Bengalis. that was the genesis of the birth of Bangladesh.

You are right.Bangla is very similar of what used to be the case with Russian language.During the imperial time Czar and his courtier used to speak in french language and they look down upon the Russian as a language of the Serfs(an agricultural laborer bound under the feudal system to work on his lord's estate.).This change in 1812 when Napoleon attacked Russia. Then the Czar and elite class suddenly switch to speaking Russian out of patriotism. Some time latter they again ditch their native language and start speaking German language as they considered German to be the aristocratic language. This whole affairs of speaking alien language by the Czar and his courtier ended in 1917 by overthrowing of Czardom. Now I can't imagine Vladimir Putin speaking French or German instead of Russian as his mother tongue.:-)

Time to move on now. We can only hope that our relation with BD should get better.

Urdu is an Indian language, yes, it came out of UP in India. However it was made for the Muslims of SA and not exclusive to one country. If one looks at Islamic literary, Urdu is used quite a lot. It's mix of Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit makes it better for transliteration purposes, but it's roots are still from India.

And anyway, the common man will not be able to make distinction between Urdu and Hindi, it sounds the same. Urdu speakers are the subject of call centre jokes just as Indian speakers are lol ;)
Urdu's stronghold may be UP-Delhi, but the contribution in Urdu's development from Punjab in West, from Bengal-Orissa-Bihar in the East, from Kashmir in the North, and from Southern regions should not be ignored.

Bengal did a lot for Urdu books so why should the language be ignored? I have always seen Urdu on a native level as my own mother tongue. We the Bangali have naturally been multilingual people, we can attest to that in ME & gulf states.

Some people are trying to wipe their own heritage it is unbelievable. Cherry picking to satisfy their own agenda, so called Bangladeshis.

@khair_ctg keeps on asking ridiculous questions. So this liberal Pakistani answers many of the question and clears the confusions. One is why Bangladesh renames itself Bangladesh from Pakistan, why not Pakistanis make shindhidesh punjab desh. The thing is, real Pakistan died in 1971. Now you can name it Pakistan or anything that is not the same Pakistan as before
