ISLAMABAD: Why Pakistan has abandoned F-16 Deal with US

Pakistan and US had struck a deal for 8 F-16 Fighter jets which was to be materialised by May 24, 2016.

However US Congress did not approve the required funding of $430 millions which was to be provided as a subsidy to be paid by US as a partner of Pakistan in War against terrorism.

An amount of $270 million was supposed to be paid by government of Pakistan as the total amount of the 8 F-16 was calculated at $700 millions.

After US refusal to pay the subsidy of $430 millions Pakistan government has decided to abandon the F-16 Deal with United States.

Pakistan is mulling the options of acquiring some other fighter jets for its Air Force and the likely option includes Chinese J-10 or in future Chinese latest J-31 may also be considered.

It is not the first time that United States has betrayed Pakistan in this regard. After the Afghan War when Pakistan acted as front line state against the Soviet Union, United States did not deliver Pakistan 28 F-16 fighter jets for which even Pakistan had paid the price.

Pressler Amendment and the subsequent sanctions against Pakistan banned F-16 sale and it had to buy wheat and Soya been oil in lieu of the huge amount of money $658 millions that it had paid to US for the purchase of F-16 fighter jets.

While at the same time reportedly India has been offered by US F-16 sale along with the production factory.

Is it the replica of the betrayal again ?

The deal is done and dusted. Pakistan isn't getting F-16s. There is no need to even wish for it. This is old news and we need to move on.

A new deal can be negotiated (and re-negotiated) at any time. Such things change all the time. Nothing is permanent in international geopolitics.

Billi ki khwaab me chichre...

Forget the F-16s. The whole relationship with the US should be forgotten. It is over. They have chosen their side. We have chosen ours.

they will get them after the elections now thats if they wanted them

Time to move on. Save up and buy something else, or plough the money into something more worthwhile. The deal was always mired in doubt, especially with the fact that US taxpayers were asked to part fund the jets.

It is said that a wise man is not bitten twice. US attitude in '65, again in '71 and finally the Pressler amendment should have been more then enough for us to sever military ties with US permanently as their reliability is quite predictable. The way the US is slowly and gradually abandoning Saudi Arabia......after sucking it dry for decades, is an example unlike any other. And it is not just with Muslim countries, the US has a long history of abandoning allies, after they outlast the usefulness.

It's not betrayal really, it is just very good business. They usually get the better deal because the weak are scared easy. I just hope that we wise up before we are screwed over any more.

There is no such thing as betrayal. US would do whatever is in its interest. They don't need us anymore, or not need us enough at least, to fund our F16s.

I find it a blessing. I hope this helps with the old rotten useless addiction of PAF morons to American inventory.

US always same attitude when ever democracy came in Pakistan, its Pentagon Policy to always support the dictators in Pakistan.

Let Pakistan do whatever serves its own national interests. USA does the same. That is just the way it works.

Paf should think out of the box and seriously think about some other reliable sanction free platform. And i think Paf think tanks can think much better then us. I hope this time they choose wisely.

It so appears that Pakistan was only interested in the F-16's because they were dirt cheap in that deal. Now that USA has backtracked on its words, Pakistan has better options and most importantly they would be strings free. From now on wards Pakistan should restrict it's interaction with US, It's obvious that US is going back to it's old ways and Pakistan has other priorities.........Pakistan should refuse those AH-1Z's as well and i guess this is the reason why Pakistan has renewed it's interest in Turkish gunship.

There is no betrayal here by either side. Pakistan is welcome to these 8 aircraft if it can pay for them out of its own resources. No problem.
it doesn't make sense to spend a billion dollars on a fighter which is to be only used against "terrorists"
there are too many strings attached with it.
i dont think Pakistan will go with any USA weapons unless of course somebody spend enough kick backs
