FRANCE: Demonstrators ransacked a Muslim prayer hall and attempted to burn copies of the Quran on the French island of Corsica Friday, police said, following a night of violence that left two firefighters injured.

Tensions had mounted in Ajaccio on Christmas Day after two firefighters and a police officer were wounded overnight in Jardins de L’Empereur, a low-income neighbourhood of the city when they were “ambushed” by “several hooded youths”, authorities said.

On Friday afternoon around 150 people had gathered in front of police headquarters in the island’s capital in a show of support for the police and firefighters, officials said in a statement.

But some in that crowd broke away to join as many as 600 who headed for the housing estate where the violence took place the night before.

They shouted slogans in Corsican meaning “Arabs get out!” or “This is our home!”, an AFP correspondent reported.

Nearby was a Muslim prayer room and a small group smashed the glass door and entered the place of worship, ransacking it and partially burning books including copies of the Quran, said regional official Francois Lalanne.

“Fifty prayer books were thrown out on the street,” Lalanne said, adding that some of the pages were burnt.

Police were to remain present on the housing estate overnight on Friday, with a security presence around five Muslim places of worship in Ajaccio, Lalanne told AFP.

They would receive reinforcements in the coming days, he added.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls wrote on Twitter that the break-in was “an unacceptable desecration”, while also condemning the “intolerable attack” on the wounded firefighters.

Anouar Kbibech, president of the French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM), said he had learnt of the mosque attack and the burning of “several copies of the Quran” with “distress”.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said the attack on the Muslim prayer hall showed signs of “racism and xenophobia”.

He also condemned the assault on law enforcement and safety officers in Corsica, saying he hoped “the authors of the violence would be identified and arrested as soon as possible.”

Local authorities including Christophe Mirmand, the prefect or top official of Corsica, also vowed to arrest those responsible for the outbreak of violence over two days on the Mediterranean island.

The Christmas violence came amid heightened security measures for the season in France after the November 13 attacks by militants in Paris that killed 130 people.

Dalil Boubakeur, the rector of the Grand Mosque of Paris, said he was “dismayed and saddened” by the events on Corsica in an appearance on France’s BFMTV, calling for “calm and cool heads”.

Around 120,000 French police, members of armed units and soldiers were mobilised on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Corsica is a department of France which held regional elections earlier this month, which had seen the far-right anti-immigrant Front National make unprecedented gains in the first round of the vote.

On Corsica the nationalists won the regional election there taking power for the first time.

Welcome to France 2015 !
Where even poor firefighters get attacked by the same again ! @Steve781 @bobo6661 @flamer84

They called the firefighters and police officers to their suburb and they literally ambushed them,i can understand people are angry. I am also. (A "guet-apens" as we say here.)
-
I've even read that in some suburbs of Marseille, firefighters, paramedics don't go there without Police protection/don't dare to.

I support our Corsican Police officers and firefighters !

So shit happens all over the world. So my question to all you guys can we create story like EU and US does start with Christian attacked Muslims :blah::blah: or Christian extremist attack mosque:blah::blah::blah::blah:.

Do these kind of articles are good or bad? because in our case

Protesters or Mob is always replace with Muslims attack or Muslims extremist

That is not an answer of my question. Anyway we should respect each other and correct our self. That is why i write this question.

Didn't saw you condemning the ambush on fire fighters and police officer, you straight away dived into victim mode. First of all be objective when presenting your point of view before calling for mutual respect and course correction.

It's not acceptable to any law abiding and upright citizen. Unfortunately in Indian subcontinent emergency services staff often face unfriendly mob at the sites, it's a thankless job they do. A typical developing world behavior I would say.

Now why that attack is not labelled "Crusade Against Islam" or "Christian Terrorism"??? As west is quick to label all Muslims bad deeds as "Islamic Fundamentalism" or "Islamic Terrorism".

when a attack is made by western people "its individual act" or "mental issue" but if Muslim do same its "Islamic Terrorism", that is hypocrisy at its best.

Extremely deplorable and heinous act.
To top it all attack on Fire fighters.
All those guilty must be brought to justice.

Heinous and shows Mob mentality.
Mutual respect of different faiths is bedrock of human civilization. I'm not sure what agenda would get further with some rotten minds burning Holy Books. it only is going to attract hatred.
Recently when Donald Trump asked for followers of Islam faith to be denied entry to US, Jimmy Kimmel (Talk show host) remarked that statements or actions of hatred against a community only serves to galvanize negative elements (ISIS in this case).
also agree with @Nilgiri comment that media should portray news in a more responsible manner.

People can be frustrated and angry but venting it out on public servants like police and firefighters and damaging vehicles is just a mob mentality.

The frustration by Muslim people is understandable.. But then again taking such actions dont help any sides..

It doesnt look like french want any stop to this madness

Ajaccio : «Il aurait pu y avoir des morts» raconte un pompier agressé

One of the injured firefighter decided to talk about what happened and will translate to you guys what he said...... i heard it,and it is really a SHAME. Even the word shame is too "light".
-
(Sorry for my bad English)
-

"We've been called for a fire (Those that attacked the firefighters did it by purpose so the firefighters will come in their neighborhood),in a neighborhood called "L'empereur" in Ajaccio.
When we arrived there,we've seen many persons near the fire, probably ~50s or ~60s,and then they attacked us with rocks, concrete blocks, iron bars, and others projectiles.
Then we decided not to go out of our truck and we decided to retreat, but a lot of youths blocked us,it was a real ambush/trap etc.
They had iron bars, baseball bats, they were masked, they really tried to hurt us.
They tried to broke into our truck,we did everything so they couldn't enter, but they broke the windows......
One of us could have died if not injured...
It's sad that it happened".
-
He said it was really organized, that they prepared it well,it was a real ambush.
-
Has you or any of your colleague been ever attacked in this neighborhood ?
-
He replied Yes,they sometimes throwed rocks at them, but it was never like what happened to us this night.
-
He also said that it's realy a shame...........that firefighters are here to save people........ said again it was the first time it was so violent.
-
He also said that they insulted them,a lot of insults, they even insulted the people of Corsica.

obviously these aren't civilized people.
The fact that they carried crude weapons does tell about their real intentions.
I suppose whatever evidence (any CCTV footage etc) should be used to book the people responsible.
One more thing, the account of a firefighter that the attack could've proved fatal, tells me that there could be some peoplewith criminal background. Such people trying to disturb harmony and bring disrepute to a society based on religious hatred must not be spared at all.
I'm sure law enforcing and investigation agencies in France are fully capable to take care of these goons.
