Modi's Message to Pakistan at SAARC

Dont know about HDI.. but we have a 75 million strong middle class thats 45% of our population... unlike india where middle class is a rare breed ... apart from massive poverty...:)

India has 700 million without toilets, starving for a day's food, malnutrition a common sign and physically weak and dark.

Not really. He is a current MP, a former minister, former UN Deputy Secretary General, an excellent speaker and a well known scholar, someone who completed his PhD at the age of 22 from The Fletcher School at Tufts. He is the exact opposite of "ordinary".

In case people start drooling over that post:

He was Under-Secretary General for Communications and Public Information

Some senior posts within the UN System have the equivalent rank of Under-Secretary-General but are either not entitled or choose not to use the formal title. The most prominent example of this is the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, who is often referred to as the third most senior official within the UN System yet does not use the title of Under-Secretary-General.

With over 50 people with the rank of Under-Secretary-General, unsurprisingly the influence and power they wield within the UN System varies dramatically.

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite statistic of life expectancy, education, and income indices used to rank countries into four tiers of human development. It was created by Indian economist Amartya Sen and Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq in 1990

Indian life expectancy is 65 years, while Pakistanis is 67.08 years: List of countries by life expectancy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Income ratio Pakistan has $5000 while Indian is around $5000 too.

I will post you the complete HDI (Human Development Index) report: http://hdr.undp.org/sites/default/files/Country-Profiles/PAK.pdf

 It was Mahbub ul Haq who created HDI ..

Mahbub ul Haq | The Economist
Mahbub ul Haq, a heretic among economists, died on July 16th, aged 64
From the print edition

WHEN Mahbub ul Haq was in what he called the “western citadels of learning” of Cambridge, Yale and Harvard in the 1950s, there was, he said, a “tacit assumption” in economics that the real purpose of development was to increase national income. To say otherwise was “heresy”. For the next 40 or so years Mr Haq was happy to be a heretic. A guidebook for economic heretics is the “Human Development Report”, started by him in 1990 and published each year since.

At its core is an index for human development devised by the ingenious Mr Haq which measures more subtly the attainments of nations than does gross national product, the familiar GNP. His index reflects national well-being: life expectancy, education and welfare, as well as wealth.

Dr. Mahbub ul-Haq

Described as "the most articulate and persuasive spokesman" for the developing world, Dr. Mahbub ul-Haq pioneered many economic policies to help the poor. He served as chief economist of Pakistan's National Planning Commission during the 1960s, director of the World Bank's Policy Planning Department in the 1970s, and in various Pakistani cabinet posts during the 1980s. As special advisor to the United Nations Development Program, he developed the Human Development Index, which measures development by people's well-being, rather than by their income alone. Haq was the author of six books on poverty and development. He died in 1998 in New York.

This index was developed in 1990 by the Pakistani economist Mahbud ul Haq, and has been used since 1993 by the United Nations Development Programme in its annual report.

Thank you for correcting me. That does not change the value or the purpose of my post however. You might also want to know that he lost to Ban Ki-moon narrowly in the elections for Secretary General despite getting more popular votes because the US vetoed him.
