BJP chief claims English bad for India, triggers outrage

It will be a miracle of these idiots manage to actually get voted by majority Indians.

In Indian culture language carriers culture. How do you expect someone from South India to want to lose their culture to a North Indian?

Can you understand the book or do you need it to be translated?

I m sorry. But are you implying that it is OK to lose it to an Englishman??

"English is not really an alien language to us. It is the language of our intellectual make-up-like Sanskrit or Persian was before- but not of our emotional make-up. We are all instinctively bilingual, many of us writing in our own language and in English. We cannot write like the English. We should not. We can write only as Indians."---RAJA RAO.(Kanthapura,1938)

What do you mean prefer? history is not all about choices alone. English is as much a part of our history as Hindi would be in South India, actually more so. Being unnecessarily judgmental because your own experience does not grant you the tools to understand different positions is usually reserved for the religious nut-jobs. Why are you in that boat?

What does it have to do with religion?

I think it is a nationalistic idea to want to have your own native language(s) as the official language of your country.

Like having German in Germany, French in France, Malay in Malaysia, Japanese in Japan, Thai in Thailand, etc. Nothing wrong with that, right?

Also, an Indian poster was recently lecturing me about China losing its culture. What language do you think Confucius wrote in? Chinese. What language is our constitution written in? Chinese. Where was our highest leader born? China.

Same for most other countries. And there is nothing wrong with that.

HE just meant "westernisation is bad",,Not English...

Gandhi and Nehru also said the same thing despite both getting education in London. But, we elected Congress. And, they forgot this matter thereafter. :partay:

Which Tamil or Andhra villager understands English??? The commoners in these states know neither English nor Hindi. So, please dont speak on their behalf.

im not speaking on my behalf..they donot understand hindi or bengali either.which is why they have 2 official languages english and their native language and the same is the case with bengal or gujarat..they donot understand tamil and telugu do they??in what language do u think the interstate language should be then??u have to study the history of india after independence..this stage today was reached after so many deliberations thanks to our nation builders and their commitment to the unity with one side communal fundamentalists who says only hindi should be their official language and other side dmk who says all the aryans and hindi speaking people are enemies of tamils .india has come a long way today they managed pretty well and left english to be official language.it can be removed as an official language when all the non hindi speakers are comfortable with hindi..any hasty decision would bring back all the problems.for today we need english..

It has more to do with preserving the culture. Non-Hindi speakers were somehow convinced that using Hindi would erode away their culture. While despite having English as an official language during colonial rule, the culture was not effected. So they prefer English over Hindi.

Nothing to do with religion, that was a reference to being judgmental. However, now that you mention it, Sanskrit would not be acceptable to many(even in its now dead form) because of its connection to Hinduism. India is imply different. Unlike China, there is no common language spoken throughout India (my state of Karnataka is home to at least 3 indigenous languages ) and English is regarded by many as an ideal neutral language. add to it, the fact that Indians treat English as their own language for the most part and you will understand that it would be not very different from speaking another Indian language. Probably better because there is usually no long history of friction, as there is between the different native language speakers on language.

Thats why South Indians prefer tooti phooti english over speaking hindi
Most of the South Indians are better in English than North Indians (set aside pronunciations). THE HINDU (Estd. 1878) played an important in the development of Indian English Literature. Nothing to look down upon the South Indians.

Can you please refrain from talking to me, aunti?

bwahahah leave the forum if you cant tolerate truth.

The truth is that as you said South Indians cant stand losing their language to North Indians and the truth is indeed these South Indians go for english speaking even if not fluently instead of speaking Hindi.

They hate hindi

same is the case with india aswell buddy ur just confused india with a homogenous place.no its not..here aswell people in andhrapradesh speak telugu, tamilnadu speak tamil, gujarat speak gujarathi, and bengal speak bengali..its only when they have to speak with each other they use hindi or english..more so when a south indian speaks with a north indian they use english.and in this globalised world where communications between different states and different nations is mandatory we use english.its not that we forgot our native language.its the same reason why ur using english in this forum than cantonese or mandarin..got it??

This is just the uninformed opinion of a detached city dweller who knows nothing about the real India...English being regarded as the natural lamguage???:hitwall: Shows you have perhaps never gone beyond the borders of bangalore city..... certainly never to the vast hinterlands of northern India.

So, we need to impose a difficult, alien language on all citizens just because some city people love it and consider it their own
