BJP chief claims English bad for India, triggers outrage

We must not let Indian nukes fall into hands of Hindu extremists and political parties like BJP

They are right. India should not have English as their de facto official language.

If the Government of West Bengal wants to communicate with the Government of Tamil Nadu, why don't they use an Indian language instead of English? Why is it that Manmohan Singh addresses the nation using English?

If Hindi is too politically sensitive, then why not Sanskrit? It is shocking that there are only 14,000 Indians who can write Sanskrit.

In China, everybody can write in the same language with which Sun Tzu wrote the Art of War over 2500 years ago. The characters are still the same as they were before.

And yet in another thread, an Indian member was accusing China of giving up our culture! Have you heard Hu Jintao once speaking English in public? I don't think he has spoken English ever, in public or private.

communications between local govts take place in the languge they deemed to be comfortable central govt has no say in it.also along with english hindi is also an officail language used for the communications of central govt.its not easy in case of india to select a single official language official language in bengal is bengali and tamil nadu is tamil in what language do u think they should spek??usually inter state communications take place in english.india is not a simple case like china we have 10s of languages and 100s of dielects..
look at this 500 rupee note

on the left side u can see different scripts of languages used in india and each script is used by many languages..theres is a reason we successfull consolidated this diverse country all these years.we dont believe in melt down policy like use.we preserve every diversity.and we're a democracy we cannot coerce people to use a single language china is not a democracy and its easy there.any such attempt might cause serious implications on the unity of our country

China has been fortunate in escaping direct colonial rule while India was not so lucky... The scars from colonialism run deep and the worst part is that the sufferer is now in love with those scars -- a kind of Stockholm syndrome, and will not allow for surgery at any cost. Continuation of English is one such deep scar:

True, and the evidence is people like "third eye".

Who would prefer a Western language to be the official language of a country like India, which has plenty of its own languages.

Western official language, Western leader (Sonia), Western system. It makes no sense that they want to replace their heritage with Western ones.

In Indian culture language carriers culture. How do you expect someone from South India to want to lose their culture to a North Indian?

Can you understand the book or do you need it to be translated?

Yeah, I just helped to elect CY Leung in the recent elections. Read about it.

Anyway your argument is dumb.

America has one language as the official language, so does Britain, Germany, etc. You can learn Spanish at home but when you go to school or deal with the Government, you have to use the official language.

Now don't tell me India is more free than those Western countries, where Dalits can't even walk 10 feet in front of a higher caste person.

The only thing you're telling me is that you prefer a Western language to be India's official language rather than a native one. And a Western leader like European Catholic Sonia, who you did not elect by the way.

Without wanting to get into a one-on- one on a non issue with a member whose posts I often prefer to read over others flying the same flag...

All I want to convey is that no two situations / Countries / methods of governance are the same. They are evolved over time by those involved.

Others ought not to poke their noses into areas which they are not completely familiar with.

I communicate in a language the Constitution of my country is written in.

Is there a problem somewhere ?

The writings of Sun Tzu and Confucius several thousand years ago are written in the same Chinese characters we use today.

There are of course some differences in grammar and meanings of some characters, but apart from that it is the same and can be picked up and read straight away.

I on the other hand am perfectly happy to get into a one-on-one argument with a member who I used to respect, but now I don't.

If it doesn't bother you that your official language is Western, your highest leader is a white European, and that your system is Western, then that's up to you. Why should I care?

If you don't like what I post then don't read it.

please stop b.s why didnt u use ur mother tounge to post this rather than ur mother tongue??its because not everybody can understand it right??then whats different in case of india??it can be understood in any part of the country.what language do u think must be official??

If we had adopted Sanskrit, the most perfect of all languages just for the fact that it doesn't change over time, muslims would be angry we are trying to rehinduize them.

Mandarin is also a widely-spoken Northern dialect, similar to the position of Hindi in India.

I am from Hong Kong so my native dialect is Cantonese, but I learned Mandarin anyway, even before the handover. Because that is the best way for me to communicate with Chinese people from other regions of China.

Standard Chinese is the "Lingua Franca" of China.

Am I not expressing myself right now?

And don't give me that BS, you guys get arrested for "liking" posts on Facebook. I make risky comments on Facebook all day long and nobody cares.

Not that bad in India either...

In most parts you can easily get away with Hindi, except maybe the remote Rural areas. Only the Southernmost state of Tamil Nadu is sometimes a bit too fanatic against Hindi...but a smattering of Hindi with English generally works.

The real issue is that the intelligentsia and the elites are totally in thrall of English and their mental processes always have a western compass...so they would rather read Hegel than Chanakya even though the later may be far more relevant to our country.

Your system too is western with a chinese tint to it.

What do you mean prefer? history is not all about choices alone. English is as much a part of our history as Hindi is (especially in South India actually more so). Being unnecessarily judgmental because your own experience does not grant you the tools to understand different positions is usually reserved for the religious nut-jobs. Why are you in that boat?

Which Tamil or Andhra villager understands English??? The commoners in these states know neither English nor Hindi. So, please dont speak on their behalf.
