How far ahead of India is China?

Some friends do not realize that when they think they are engaging in comparisons of things that are not the same, they are really engaging in contrasts

"China was a $2 trillion economy in 2002. So India is 11 years behind China in the grand sweepstakes. "

This is the stupidest piece of analysis I have ever heard。

One 2002 dollar is very different from one 2013 dollar!!!

India has seen average inflation of some 10-15% in the last 11 years.

So you must discount India's 2012 GDP of 1.8 trillion by 2.8-4.6 to arrive at a constant dollar GDP of some 0.4-0.64 trillion dollars in 2002.

Pictures paint half the story. The fact is that the Chinese have little freedom and are forced to bow to the whims and fancies of their communist overlords. No country has become a superpower by using children in sweatshops to sew sneakers. Neither has a country whose citizens need to seek refuge in another third world country - in that China is in the same boat as Sri Lankans and Bangladeshis.

You are the world's undisputed champions of: discrimination against and torture on women muslims + minority race and religions; the run-away champions of rapists and paedophiles - 95% women are afraid to go outside afterdark. the sweatshop champions for kids, growing hub for narcotics, millions of missing kids; and the rhetorics of massive poverty, illiteracy, sanitation problems, mal-fed children ...

A one stop ‘shopping“ for all the worst and sickiest things to find in: india!

And despite all this - Chinese citizens come to India as refugees. We can just imagine how bad must things be in China.

Why would it make me happy? The travails of the destitute people of China and North Korea make me sad - not happy.

the reverse is true cheerleader! You can keep as many separatists as you want for good!

The Chinese people have always tried to escape to greener pastures and more enlightened societies - precisely the reason why there is a Chinatown in Calcutta but no Indiatown anywhere in China.

Our folks try every means to guard against the severe inferior culture in foreign lands while your culture has no foothold in China!

Point being you have to go to foreign lands since time immemorial for a better life. We understand your plight.

i'm a bit shocked. is it a kind of superiority?

Nope.
India has no freedom, just ask Dalits. India is a monarchy where a Italian housewife became the leader because she married into the right family. Indian media is very much controlled by the Indian regime to keep minorities (Muslims, Tamils, Sikhs) as low class humans. The notion that India has any freedom is a complete farce that is not supported by facts.
The bottom line is the most dangerous place for a woman to be born is in India. India has by far the worst rape culture in the world. Even 3 and 5 year old babies have been GANG RAPED. That's why many people call it the 'RAPEblic of India'.
There is practically no sanitation for poor people in India and the largest illiterate population in the world.
Indian infrastructure is non-existent.

At many levels yes. But in a situation where the govt. isn't efficiently managing social growth, you can't just sit back and say 'I won't look at GDP or macroeconomic stats because I'm not doing a good job of social growth'. At the very least a good GDP growth figure ensures relatively better employment figures which is important. In India Vs China, it is especially important becuase your kind of growth is coming because more executive based decision making in policy while that isn't the case with India. If you don't benchmark, you won't know how inefficiencies in your own policy making right?

If you look at the banana republics where corporations were encouraged to go into those countries and exploit natural resources that those countries had, the GDP still went up. It's just that the money was going the elite and just made them rich to ultra-rich. I'm not sure if that's the case in India. My knowledge of your country is limited. But if the social indicators are not moving up relative to GDP growth, that's probably a good indication that a lot of the money is staying at the top. Read about countries in the Asia Pacific or Latin America where they received massive loans to build infrastructure projects (especially energy), even though it increases debt, that increases GDP because it's inside the country, but the reality is the elite were pocketing from these projects and the locals were doing nothing because foreign workers were being shipped in to do all the building. It's precisely that reason why GDP and overall economic figures are not a great way of telling how far country A is to country B

It costs money to feed, move, cloth, and educate people. If those are not showing up and the government isn't, "efficiently managing social growth" than an increase in GDP by 100% is meaningless. That's why one should just abandon social figures because those numbers, no matter how you slice it, still matters because in encourages the health of a population and future growth.

It's like watching a sprint between two runners. The rate of speed isn't all that important tells you something but it's also meaningless. It's how healthy runner A is to runner B. It's how well trained runner A is to runner B. It's how motivated runner A is to runner B. It's where runner A is to runner B and who is closer to the finish line. At the end of the day, no matter what your priorities are or how you want to analyze it, that's all anyone will be looking at.

I'm not saying India can't compete with China. I personally and many people think that there's still a lot of potential for your country. That's not the issue though. We have to keep the eye on the ball if we want to know what areas we need to improve.
