Pakistan Navy Invites Bids to Procure an ATR 72-500 Aircraft

With the handful that we require, economies of scale will not allow it.

PS: Anyone know why the Navy is still using the old flag marking on the tail?

it can be a standard platforms for AEW, MPA, commercial, transport... air drops. maybe?

Well 5 or 6 ATR plus 10 Sea Sultans really is a massive fleet, very big. Will equal size of Indian P-8 fleet, and it terms of size I think only China, US, Japan and Russia are bigger. It is a surprisingly large number for a coastline as small as Pakistan's, even if we have India to contend with.
PN is not only taking care of IN but it’s participating hugely in international naval operations and activities, AMAN21 is an example. So this fleet is actually very good.

AMAN last 4 days and is held every two years. Unsure if PN deploys MPAs abroad on a regular basis and one does not invest hundreds of millions just to participate in exercises. It seems PN is looking at more than just hunting subs but keeping a constant eye on the Arabian sea

it’s not just coastline you have eez plus additional shelf now claimed plus finding a sub is still not a cake walk and oceans are deep and with too many places to hide 😉

do we know what package it is ?

Not heard of 4th ATR upgrade as of now, maybe for civilian use.

As I remember PN used 4 Fokker MPAs and used additional two for training/SSGN Para dropping.

Maybe they are doing the same thing with ATR?

Also, doubt all ATRs would be deployed at any one time, hence makes sense to have additional units for longevity.

Yes, of course, and even with 5 in service we can probably only have 2 in the air at anytime, combined with 10 Sea Sultans (enabling say 3 in the air at anytime), that is still a hell of a lot of MPA for our area of responsibility, which is a good thing.

To give some perspective, Indian coast line is around 8 times larger yet they will only have 16 P-8s

Australia as we know is a massive island and will only have 16 P-8s.

This looks like we can swamp the Arabian Sea with sounboys... :yahoo:

I don't know what sensor/radar suite the Indian P-8Is have but recently they deployed a couple to Ladakh due to the applicability of the sensors to the terrain there. Similarly, I recall our P-3Cs being used in the WOT in KPK, so therefore there may be a plan to deploy some units up north as well as the conventional use in terms of their naval role.

IMO PN will acquire 6-8 RAS-72s for coastal / short range duties plus may be 2 more for utility purposes.

If PN has 8 then 3 can be on-duty at a time for high intensity scenarios.

Sea Sultans will be for long range duties.

Please keep in mind that PN is expanding by leaps & bounds and expect to have more systems like RAS-72s & Sea Sultans, ships & submarines and our small coastline does not matter.

We need to have an effective sea denial & limited control capability.
