KARACHI: On the very first day of taking charge of the Ministry of Works and Services, Zulfiqar Mirza failed to make secret his anger and vindictiveness against the media and launched an undisguised attack on the freedom of the press. While disallowing the Geo News team from covering his tour of the MA Jinnah Road Light House area, he threatened to kill the reporter on duty and ordered his guards to snatch the media team’s camera, microphone, bullet-proof jackets, helmet, and DVs.

The minister’s convoy, comprising over-a-dozen mobiles and an army of both uniformed and plainclothes guards, snatched the equipment of the media team at gunpoint. The minister used abusive and vulgar language against the media. He kept showering profane language at senior anchorpersons and TV journalists.

Later, on his orders, the police tried to bundle the Geo News team into a police mobile and during this fracas, the minister pulled the office identity cards of reporter Shoaib Burney and cameraman Zubairuddin from around their necks.

Journalists have termed the senior minister’s behaviour as ‘savage and shameful’ and called the incident a blatant attack on the freedom of the press. Expressing unmitigated indignation, journalists have demanded an appropriate action from authorities against this abuse of power by someone who claims to be a representative of the people.

I propose a new slogan for the 'roti, kapra, makaan' party, since the only thing the PPP has done every time it has come to power is in fact take away the little 'Roti, Kapra, Makaan' the people of Pakistan have.

Supposedly the military already turned down a PPP directive to launch a military operation in Karachi, and strongly argued against assigning Mirza any 'high level position' in government or any sort of 'crackdown' against the MQM and/or Urdu Speaking population of Sindh.

I personally don't think there is any doubt left, given the history of stoking ethnic hatred by the current PPP leadership, that this party is nothing but a bunch of hatemongers, who will set the country on fire through stoking and provoking ethnic tensions and violence, just to 'retain power'.

New province creation will have to start from Punjab and KP (Hazara) - the ethnic politics of Baluchistan and Sindh will, IMO, not allow those two provinces to be the first. If Punjab and KP are done first, there is a strong possibility of the Sindh nationalists who are against a division of the province losing support.

Don't let the man goad you - if you read the analysis in the National Politics thread, this is precisely what the PPP wants to do to retain seats in Sindh, stoke ethnic hatred and violence and try and regain support from the Sindhi speaking population.

The PPP is full of such hatemongers and racists - their entire term since 2008 alone has been full of virulent attacks against 'Punjabis and Muhajirs'.
