Zia ul Haq Biography - Pakistan's Greatest Hero or Villain

Iranian mafia in Pakistan has common approach of propaganda like Indinas.
Talk $hit and talk a lot but zero substance or evidence.
If Bhutto was hanged, that was sentenced by judiciary. If some one was in Jail, he was probably caught in terrorism or sabotage.
The biggest but hurt for the IRGC lovers in Pakistan is that during Zia's rule Iranian revolution didn't over took Pakistan.
However after killing Zia, Pakistan was made play ground of Iran and India.
Bhutto family destroyed Pakistan's economy and society completely.... and are busy again as we speak.

His biggest mistake was patronizing Nawaja. If he knew how Nawaz would've turned out he probably would've had him lined up on the wall.

Otherwise he culminated the nuclear program and guaranteed Pakistan's safety against Soviet threats.

He should've wiped PPP clean entirely. Had ISI taken out Benazir or whatever that would've helped Pakistan tremendously.

.
Pakistan's nuclear program was started around 1974 or 75, and there was NO progress what so ever in the first few years according to Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan (in his interview), Zia ul Haq took charge in 1977 and only THEN the work on pakistan's nuclear program got accelerated and by 1984 Pakistan had already achieved the ability to make nuclear weapon according to the architect of Pakistan's nuclear program Dr. Abdul Qadeer. Dr. Qadeer clearly stated that the biggest contribution/achievements for nuclear weapons were made ONLY in Zia ul Haq's time under his patronage. He said Gen. Zia made everything available to them that they needed, every kind of technologies/spare parts from black markets etc. The nuclear weapon was NOT made "innocently" that ZA Bhutto started and then it automatically came into "existence".

Kindly state the facts,

ZA Bhutto started the program in 72 after loosing Bangladesh.
Pakistan is believed to have capability of creating the weapon in 87.
PAEC under instructions of Bhutto, formed a team to work exclusively to work on the nuclear weapon.
Western world started cracking down on Pakistan's ambitions, Canada who initially provided Pakistan with CANDU heavy water reactor, stopped support. France pulled out of Chashma reactor without completing it. Several other.
During Zia time, west had only one thing in mind i.e. to defeat USSR, due to which they ignored Pakistan's advancement.

I'm not a PPP fan but you have to give credit where it is due. Firstly because it is the right thing to do, and secondly, if you dont, nobody would be willing to work for Pakistan.

Zia was very lucky to get charge of the country when west wanted Pakistan at all costs.

Iran had revolution and anti west govt,
China was hostile,
India was heavily inclined toward Soviet,
USSR was expanding into Afghanistan and there was possibility of USSR entering into Europe,
Berlin Wall crises.

Still Zia never used the advantage in benefit of Pakistan, and given Siachen to India on a plate. Failed to use west to pressure India into coming to an agreement over Kashmir or at least accepting international mediation on Kashmir. Instead he introduced a sect crises in the country.

Watch this program where Javed chaudry interviewed Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan about the complete story of the development of Pakistan's nuclear weapon. What I found is that even the initiative was also by Dr. Qadeer himself and NOT by ZA bhutto. I will take Dr. Abdul Qadeer's words than anyone else's words and so should everyone.

Many believe Dr Samar was the one who did most work, many believe Dr Qadeer. Everyone will want to prove he is the sole hero, just like every other gentleman. Not saying Dr Qadeer did nothing, actually his support helped Pakistan's nuclear program tremendously, but his part was just a part out of many parts that make the whole story. I'm not going to make it further controversial. I have my research and all the sources pointed out to what I posted in post#63. Feel free to ask for the sources, though they are not to hard to find.

Berlin Wall crises.
LOL!!! Berlin wall crisis was in 1961. Nothing to do with Zia.

China was hostile,
Wrong. China was not hostile to the USA anymore after Deng came into power and embraced capitalism. Instead USA and China were allies against USSR.

USSR was expanding into Afghanistan and there was possibility of USSR entering into Pakistan,
Corrected for you.

Still Zia never used the advantage in benefit of Pakistan, and given Siachen to India on a plate. Failed to use west to pressure India into coming to an agreement over Kashmir or at least accepting international mediation on Kashmir.

How on earth could Pakistan have fought India when a superpower USSR who was the closest ally/friend to India was in Afghanistan and USSR wanted to capture Pakistani territory to come into warm waters. No sane person would peddle this argument.

Failed to use west to pressure India into coming to an agreement over Kashmir or at least accepting international mediation on Kashmir.

He was the only leader who had the balls to go for Khalistan insurgency. Benazir literally betrayed Pakistan by giving India lists of Sikh separatists. Not to mention Kashmir freedom movement of 90's which literally kicked out more than 100000 Hindus from Kashmir which India still cry to this day; all because of the policies of President Zia. If President Zia had lived long enough, Kashmir and Khalistan both would have been independent.

Instead he introduced a sect crises in the country.

He successfully thwarted the plans of Mullah regime to export their Mullah revolution inside Pakistan.

I'm not a PPP fan
But you are a Bhutto fan so your frustration is understandable.

Bhutto started the program but the one who accelerated and completed the nuclear program was President Zia.

Despite many hardships and cracking down from west, Bhutto was the one who started and removed the beurocratic hurdles, granted separate budget allocations, etc etc. Things were much easier in Zia era when West ignored many things intentionally, to contain Soviets.

LOL!!! Berlin wall crisis was in 1961. Nothing to do with Zia.

It was a slip of tongue, sorry. What I meant by berlin wall crises was the Berlin wall was still there dividing East and West Germany and a clear sign of soviet supremacy in Europe. West wanted to remove it at all costs.

Wrong. China was not hostile to the USA anymore after Deng came into power and embraced capitalism. Instead USA and China were allies against USSR.

Although China accepted opening up, but they were still suspicious of the western world and did not trusted the west completely.

Corrected for you.

You actually distorted it with your famboyism fever.

How on earth could Pakistan have fought India when a superpower USSR who was the closest ally/friend to India was in Afghanistan and USSR wanted to capture Pakistani territory to come into warm waters. No sane person would peddle this argument.

Warm waters...lol. Can you prove it by a proper source? It is just one section who believe they wanted our warm waters. Just like some in Pakistan believe Exonmobil lied about no oil in kekra1 after drilling out the entire oil...lol

So you mean it was a great decision to quietly accept Indian presence and occupation of Siachen.

Lol, Kashmir movement started in 90's, whereas Zia was gone in late 80's. Though I agree Benazir destroyed the Khalistan cause.
Zia was only with ball of steels to destroy Pakistan socially. I repeat if not for USSR he would've been known as ball of airs.

He successfully thwarted the plans of Mullah regime to export their Mullah revolution inside Pakistan..

But imported wahabi mullaism and secterian terrorists who later brainwashed hundreds of thousands and created havoc in 2000's.

But you are a Bhutto fan so your frustration is understandable.

I'm not a fanboy like you, Bhutto, Zia, Benazir, Nawaz, Altaf, Fazlu, all are responsible of destroying Pakistan. You can blindly worship zia, or whoever.

I have heard the video and also read quite a few comments. It is clear that as always Zia remains controversial and divisive figure to this day.

Even though military coup and the hanging of Bhutto happened while I was working in Kuwait, the 1976 elections and the Nizam-e-Mustafa movement were in full swing while I was still working in Pakistan for Esso (later early days of PSO). I have been a witness to all of this drama thus among the few still alive who know the way it was.
The video is correct in most of its statements, however, quite a few events have been misrepresented.
Since many of members of this illustrious forum were either too young or not even born, permit me to briefly recant the history as I saw it.

As the Afghan war has played a crucial role in Zia’s career, let us start with the timeline of the Afghan problem.

World first came to know of the Communist Party of Afghanistan when the Marxist “People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) held its first congress in January 1965. Mohammad Daud Khan, the Prime Minister & a cousin of the King ousted the King Zahir Shah on 17th July 1973 and declared himself the President.

Military units loyal to the PDPA carried out a military Coup against the Daud regime on April 27th, 1978 killing him along with his family and installed Noor Mohammad Tamaki as President 3 days later. Taraki signed a ‘Treaty of Friendship’ with the Soviet Union on December 1978.

Taraki was murdered on Sept. 14, 1979, by the then Prime Minister Hafizullah Amin. Hafizullah Amin was not trusted by the Soviets who invaded Afghanistan on Dec 24, 1979, and installed Babrak Kamal, head of the ‘Parcham’ faction of the PDPA on 27 The December 1979.

Geneva accord was signed on April 14, 1988, and the last soviet troops vacated Afghanistan on Feb 15, 1989.

Initially, President Carter was not happy with Zia due to the suspected nuclear program & the hanging of ZA Bhutto. However Soviet invasion changed all that. The USA initially offered Pakistan a mere $200-million in aid which was dismissed by Zia as “Peanuts”. It was only after the offer was increased to $2-billion that Pakistan became fully involved.

I agree with the Video statement that no one is totally evil. Zia also had some good qualities and a few of his actions were beneficial for Pakistan. The good points first.

Zia kept the KRL fully autonomous and gave Dr. AQ Khan a free hand providing him with the required funds to complete the Project -706. Zia’s role in the development of Pakistan’s atomic bomb, therefore, remains crucial.

When Rajiv Gandhi ordered mobilization of his troops with the cover of the military exercise along Pakistani border; Zia managed to avoid potential l flare up with India thru his Cricket Diplomacy when he went to Jaipur to watch a cricket match between India & Pakistan in 1987.

Unlike the economic doldrums of the ZAB PP regime where most of the privately-owned industries were nationalized turning otherwise profitable concerns into the loss-making entities; Zia’s era saw robust economic growth.

Zia was also a competent armored Commander as evident from his role in helping King Hussein to crush the Palestinian uprising. IMHO the Palestinians are wrongly blaming Zia for the massacre of Black September. The actual fighting was done by the Jordanian troops.

For the record, Head of the Pakistan military Mission in Jordan was not Brigadier Zia ul Haq but Maj. General Nawazish Ali. Admittedly Zia helped the Hashemite Kingdom with the strategy & tactics. King Hussein was a friend of Pakistan and the legitimate Jordanian ruler; Zia was helping a friend of Pakistan.

However, Zia’s negative policies & actions are far greater in number and had disastrous long term consequences that haunt us to this day.

Zia carried out the military coup on 5th July 1977 within hours of the announcement that Bhutto & PNA (Opposition) leaders had reached an agreement and he was also directly responsible for ZA Bhutto’s judicial murder.

Here brief retelling of the affair is in order.

Nawab Mohammed Ahmed Khan, Kasuri from the former ruling family of Kasur was returning from a wedding in Shadman Colony Lahore in a car driven by his son Ahmed Raza Kasuri; a Member of Parliament and a strong critic of the Bhutto government. The car was ambushed shortly after midnight on Nov. 11, 1974. The nawab was fatally wounded by a bullet believed to have been intended for his son. Initially, the case had been dismissed but was refiled by Ahmed Raza Kasuri shortly after the coup in 1977.

In the trial in the Lahore High Court, a senior officer of the Federal Security Force, (a now‐disbanded paramilitary unit of Mr. Bhutto's Government) testified that Mr. Bhutto had ordered the killing of Mr. Kasuri. The appeal against the guilty verdict was rejected by a 4-3 decision of the Supreme Court on March 24, 979. Bhutto was hanged on April 5, 1979.

Even though Islamisation process had been started by ZA Bhutto, who in order to survive the crisis, declared Ahmadis non-Muslim and initiated a law forbidding the sale of alcohol to Muslims; it was Zia ul Haq who took it to the extreme.

Zia lent heavily on Islam and Jamaat Islami (Mian Tufail Ahmed was the JI leader from 1972 -1987) to compensate for his lack of popular support. Zia played ‘Havoc’ with the 1973 Constitution with the active support of JI.

The penal code was amended to add the death penalty as a punishment for blasphemy and increase the scope of what constitutes blasphemy. In 1979, he promulgated the Hudood Ordinances with punishments such as lashes for adultery. In 1980, he set up the Federal Shariat Court to hear appeals in cases under the Hudood Ordinances. In 1981, he set up a hand-picked consultative body, Majlis-e-Shoora, to act as the Federal Parliament. It was packed with the Ulema nominated by him. He also introduced mandatory Zakat deduction from bank deposits.

The elections were held on non-party basis after a government-appointed commission declared that political parties were un-Islamic. The Constitution Articles 62 & 63 were amended to included requirements that an election candidate must be Sadiq (truthful) and Amin (honest). He introduced the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan in 1985 to protect his martial law from judicial review and acquire the power to sack an elected government.

Another malaise of Zia’s era is the radicalization of Islamabad’s Lal Masjid. Its prayer leader, Muhammad Abdullah, was close to the general before he became close to the Afghan Taliban’s chief Mullah Omar and senior al-Qaeda leaders. It took another military dictator Musharraf two decades later to uproot the extremist influence from Lal Masjid in a bloody operation in 2007 and whose Mullah remains the only one in the whole country who defiantly justified the APS students’ massacre.

Zia also banned student unions in 1984, much to the impoverishment of youth engagement with politics in general and political challenge against fascist forms of conservatism in particular

The extent of his hypocrisy is evident from the fact that once he arranged his picture to be taken riding a bicycle to the office from his home to demonstrate his protocol-free lifestyle. What was not shown was the fact that that hundreds of security personnel had combed & secured the route before Zia started pedaling his bicycle

Zia’s crackdown on political dissidents and journalists resulted in the arrest of thousands of people. Many of them were incarcerated and tortured in the basements of Lahore Fort because the jails were all spilling over. Public floggings of criminals and political opponents were a routine affair and hangings were often projected widely in the media to scare people into submission.

Guns and drugs proliferated in his era. Automatic weapons, originally meant for Afghan mujahedeen, were smuggled into Pakistan and their replicas produced in the tribal area factories. Drugs produced in the border regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan were a major source of funding for the anti-Soviet warriors in Afghanistan, this gave rise to the spread of Kalashnikovs and heroin in Pakistan.

Is he responsible for every ill that plagues Pakistan today? IMO not all but many.

Personally speaking, I abhor the bigot Zia, but I leave it to readers to decide whether to love or hate him.

An account of facts from history of Soviet Afghan war:
