Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Tuesday that unless his nation wins a drawn-out battle in a key eastern city, Russia could begin building international support for a deal that could require Ukraine to make unacceptable compromises. He also invited the leader of China, long aligned with Russia, to visit.

If Bakhmut fell to Russian forces, their president, Vladimir Putin, would "sell this victory to the West, to his society, to China, to Iran," Zelenskyy said in an interview with The Associated Press.

"If he will feel some blood — smell that we are weak — he will push, push, push," Zelenskyy said in English, which he used for virtually all of the interview.

The Ukrainian leader spoke to the AP aboard a train shuttling him across Ukraine, to cities near some of the fiercest fighting and others where his country's forces have successfully repelled Russia's invasion. The AP is the first news organization to travel extensively with Zelenskyy since the war began just over a year ago.

This is most likely done to gauge what China intention was. Bear in mind it was China who raise that 12-point peace plan first, which mean they at least on paper want to be a peacemaker. Especially after Xi visited Moscow a week ago.

I would say this is more or less a political move, to see what Chinese intention was. I think Zelenskyy knows this invitation was going to be rejected (If there is ever one to begin with). Then Ukraine and the west can claim Chinese peace plan was not genuine. Which most people think so anyway.

Wouldn't say that's a surrender plan. It's more or less just a testing response for Chinese genuinely for a peace plan, I mean you can't put yourself as "Peacemaker" when you refused to visit one side of the warring fraction when you did to the other, especially after you claim to be "All Weather Brother" for the other side you had visited. This is more like Zelenskyy said "Sure China want to play peacemaking? let's talk about it"

In fact, Russian spring offensive with the 300,000 mobilised soldier is all but failed. It has to stop in mid April due to rain and preparation for counter offensive, unless Russia suddenly able to grab a lot of land in between, Ukraine is actually in more favourable position than last year. Unless Russia somehow manage to raise another troop call, this war is going to be downhill for Russia from now on.
