New Delhi: Even as India and United States of America are embroiled in a diplomatic face-off with regard to arrest of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, the armies of two countries will be hand-in-hand in a counter terrorism drill. The two countries will conduct their biggest ever joint military exercise – called Yudh Abhyas- between May-June this year. Incidentally, the timing of the joint exercise coincides with the pull out of international forces from Afghanistan.
About 250 soldiers from both sides each will train in Uttarakhand under the theme “Counter terrorism operations in mountain terrain under the UN Charter”.
An Army establishment in The Kumaon Himalayas will be the venue. According to sources, given the high experience of Indian Army in mountain and jungle warfare, armies of other countries are regularly coming to practice with the Indian soldiers and using mountain warfare facilities in the Himalayas.
This exercise with the US is a part of the ongoing series of military exercise. Last year the US had hosted the Indian Army at Fort Bragg in the month of May. Last November, Indian and US Navies participated in joint exercise off Vishakhapatnam.
The two countries which have a strategic relationship and in September last year during Prime MinisterManmohan Singh’s visit to US and his meeting with US President Barack Obama the two nations agreed to cut through laws that are restricting full-fledged defence partnership between the two countries.
