My father still has his W126 from 1987, its a300sdl black on black, needs some work on it plus a paint job but still running with no problems.

This is the thing about the MB of 1970s and 80s they were built like freaking tanks. you could drive one through the wall and it would still be going for another million miles.

It is good to see that you have kept it in its full glory, are the part easy to come by from the OEM?

Yep, they still make the parts for all MB, not that you would need them if you drive them properly!
We are just restoring the interior with a donor car. The donor car was driven by a friend who got in a hit and run by a semi. The 560sel flipped 4 time over and when the paramedics arrived they thought we was dead. As soon as they could open the door, they found him completely fine with minimal injuries. They medics told him the only reason he was alive was because he was driving a MB.
You can feel the build quality on these cars every time you close the door, like you said its like closing a tank latch!
Which vehicle do you have your eye on?

German Muscle/Luxury all the way! Perhaps swap out the aging M117 with maybe a 6.3L AMG
M156 engine used in the AMG 63 cars

thats my favourite merc... love its shame...

.
You got yourself the diesel or the 560?
What colour is yours? We are thinking of repainting our Anthracite Metallic, although it's not original to our car,.it was the best colour one could choose at the time!
Everything on mine is white, it's a 3l Petrol M103. Anthracite looks nice too!

Yea that is so true man. The w126 560sel is a legend in it's own right. It was designed in 1970s and went into production in 1980s. Now if you can survive a crash in that old car, imagine how good the current S-class are. This car and it's successor W140 are said that they were the most 'over-engineered' cars ever. Toyota started the Lexus brand just to counter these vehicles, and even today, S-class will slaughter the plastic Jap craps left and right. The good thing about Mercedes-Benz is that even if you have a 60 year old MB, you can source parts for those. Meaning, there is a cult following to restore old cars. You simply order the OEM parts recommended by MB and you can restore the mechanical of the car the full 100% factory spec.
One of my mom's uncle has a MB W108 (the S class from 1960s) he has kept the car for about 50 years now as the original owner in Lahore, but he is old now so can't keep up. I so wanted to buy it and he was selling it for 100,000 PKR which is a steal. It is a simple car to restore. Even if i put in another 300,000-400,000 PKR to restore on it, that car will attract people like no other. Unfortunately, our garage space in the house is limited, so i can't take over it now. Otherwise that is the MB project i am willing to take on with some good mechanics. So i am hoping for the best that somehow i can get my hands on it.

About the doors, well it is a MB trademark sound. Each new car they design has to keep the 'MB door closing audio' consistent. My dad has the W212 E class, and i always close and open the door twice just to listen to that 'clunk' noise.

That w108 is a beauty, whosoever so owns it is a lucky man. I've been looking around for the 300sel 6.3 and am hoping to restore it myself, only problem is living in Canada these classics are hard to come by. I would say compared to Mercedes Benz, Lexus does not have the feel of a classic or even the pleasure renowned such as MB. Some of the vehicles Toyota produced like the Lexus 430 and Land cruiser (we own the LX 470) are something else. The motors and electronics in these cars as built to last forever and the Land Cruiser also has torsion rod susp which is flawless off road, however I can't say much for the aesthetics and rigidity compared to Mercedes. I am not sure about the build quality of the new S-Class, I guess only time will tell. I haven't opened or seen many of the parts of the newer model as I don't own one, but I was replacing the wood trim in our 300sdl and noticed the wood trim is metal with maple on both sides, just amazing quality and time went to make that one piece I don't think any MB have the same quality any more after the W126. I am not a fan of the newest S-class, it has too much "bling on it". Currently now hunting for a W221 S-class or 2005/before G-Class.

How is your E-class? I owned the w 212 E class and was so sad to let it go, the worst thing we've both come across - garage space.
