naruto (just plain gangsta; huge selection of likable characters good & bad)
attack on titan (tragedies are always good; giant human monsters)
kabaneri (another tragedy yep yep; zombies)
inuyasha (good music; likable characters except kagome she's a biatch)
ghost in the shell (good story; the future could possibly be like this anime)

I am surprised that this is a defence forum and no one mentioned Legend Of Galactic Heroes

Perhaps the best anime out there for defense buffs.

The entire politics, military, bureaucracy, deep and rich history and sheer number of people in this anime makes it more of a space opera than anything.

Also you will enjoy the charecters a lot as well. Even the minor ones. This anime is HUGE btw, more than 100 eps plus few movies.

As my friend puts it "There are anime in which people talk.. A LOT.. and they suck And there are anime in which people talk a lot but they rock. LoGH is the second kind."

A good Japanese film that you guys should watch is Battle Royale. Really enjoyed it.

Regarding anime, there is a really good one called Btooom! That I enjoyed a lot. More or less, same concept.
