Xi cites Confucius as positive example for modern nation

President Xi Jinping has made no secret of his love for traditional Chinese culture by frequently quoting classic Chinese literature, most recently urging that Chinese classic poems and essays be kept in high school textbooks.

On Wednesday, he became the first Chinese president to address an international meeting on the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius (551-479 BC), Xi's latest high-profile effort to promote a culture observers said could be an answer to problems in a rising China, particularly in governance and morality.

China must preserve and develop its culture and promote exchanges between civilizations to make the world a better place, Xi said.

"Culture is the soul of a nation," Xi told hundreds of participants from home and abroad at the opening of an international conference to commemorate the 2,565th anniversary of Confucius' birth, which fall on Sunday.

"If a country does not cherish its own thinking and culture, if its people lose their soul, no matter which country or which nation, it will not be able to stand."

Observers said the new leadership's endorsement of traditional culture has reached an unprecedented level since the establishment of New China in 1949, and Confucianism, the doctrine of the much-revered thinker, obviously resonates with Chinese today.

Confucianism emphasized openness and harmony, and Xi underscored such thoughts to assure the world that a growing China would not seek expansion or confrontation, said Zhang Jian, an expert from the International Confucian Association and professor at Renmin University of China.

Amid strained ties between China and some of its neighbors over territorial disputes, Xi highlighted on Wednesday China's need for and commitment to peace.

Zhang said Confucianism, which ancient Chinese officials believed, could also help today's campaign to fight corruption and eliminate bureaucracy and lavish spending of public funds.

Yan Binggang, deputy chief of the Advanced Institute of Confucian Studies at Shandong University, said Confucianism could be the best-received way to help Chinese rebuild values that were undermined during China's three decades of turbo-charged economic growth.

But Yan said the road would be bumpy as most Chinese aged 40 to 60 were raised to disregard the traditional culture.

Preaching moral righteousness, harmony and peace, Confucian doctrines were generally worshiped by ancient monarchs, but denounced a century ago by some intellectuals who blamed Confucian thought for China's decline at the time.

It was the study of Chinese classics that i admired about pre-modern China. Theirs was focused on jurisprudence , legalism, and the authority of the monarch. The problem with the late Qing Dynasty was that there was no fault of the Confucian system, so to say. But the problem was due to the weakened central government's control of the nation led to the rise of warlordism.

Confucianism should not be blamed for backwardness of China; rather, it was the decadent lifestyle of the late Qing rulers.

Confucius or other theories are not a matter, just we must keep in mind what we are.

But Confucian lit defines Chinese civilization and culture for over a millennia.

Do you have aversion to Confucianism ?

I mean to a larger extent, East Asian civilizations have cultural affinity with China through Confucianism.

Different ages requires different approaches to mainstream culture. At times, to inject vitality, you need to strongly control certain aspect of traditional culture. But, once the objectives have been achieved, you can let the blocked stream run its course again.

Having achieved a certain level of prosperity, it is probably the right time for China to reintroduce Confucius ethics forcefully.

Culture is a perennial organism, not easily eradicated, even if suppressed to subconsciousness.

China had been too occupied with state building. Now, it is time to create a stronger nation with firm footing on both material and spiritual realms.

There are two ways to regard what is a 'generation'...

There is the physical generation where a person is borned and raised. This is about 40 yrs. However, his productive yrs would be from late teens to early 40s. In this period, he would be educated and would work to earn a living and to raise a family.

Then there is the cultural generation where a person is past his/her child rearing yrs but continues to contribute to society in intangible ways, such as his wisdom and how he passes on his experience and knowledge. This period can be up to his/her 80s or 90s.

China is looking at 1.5 cultural generations of disregard and ignorance of traditional Chinese Confucius culture, the one that has sustained the people for so long. This generation will influence on the next on what it means to be Chinese and what is Confucius, in other words, what little they know of Confucius will be even more diluted in their children's generation. It will take much more than Xi's adoration of the traditional Chinese culture to turn around the massive vehicle that is the Chinese society.

China can thank Mao for the current heading.

BS article! It just a lip service!

Prove it by kick out communism out of China!

Mainland China is starting like Taiwan.

Their president give a speech and endorsement to Confucianism and Chinese traditional culture...

But in reality, there's no room for Confucianism in Taiwan government and politics part in media, it's all about democracy and human rights. It's all about IMPORT!

Confucianism is a sinking ship and soon forgotten.

True!

You see, China's leadership is aware of the situation (given that the article was published in Global Times). It is just the best course of action as dictated by certain historical forces at certain times.

I believe it was necessary to ignore/suppress old ways and traditions at one time just as it may be time to revive certain ancient values now.

What is Confucianism? You know in anciet China,we generally follow the small government, big society exoterica, the taxes are very low(Emperor Kangxi even forbidden his descendants to raise the tax, kown as 永不加赋),the government played the little role in the economy,it's the reason China could keep peace in long times. In cultural sense, Confucianism is conservatism, loyalty, honour, family and duty, doesn't favour change, against revolution or rebellion.
Very similar to GOP policy of USA and Tory policy of UK,however this system couldn't work when the western invaders came,China need a modern army, need to built modern factories, need to built modern education system, all this need money, need to raise the taxes. After the ROC founded, the peasents found their taxes raised, led to the rebellion in many parts of China,if you read the 白鹿原(white deer plain),you can see it,what the situation after Xinhai revolution of Shaanxi
