What's new

خدا کا انتقام

You just aren't looking at the news in previous years because Trump wasn't in office and they usually don't hit Texas.

The yearly hurricane average is 12.

A record 15 hurricanes in 2005. Four were Category 5.

I remember Dennis in 2005. We were in Orlando and we had a few more days to stay there but had to scram to change tickets to an earlier flight and get out of there. It was pretty hectic.

I went to Cancun around ~1994 and the hotel I was staying in had been heavily damaged in a hurricane the previous year or two. It was pretty weird having the center pyramid with all the windows blown out and unusable. They had to move the lobby to one of the side buildings.

Pyramid at Grand Oasis is a great spot. Ironic how many of these exquisite, paradise locations are at the mercy of these Hurricanes that can turn them into shambles. The Baja Peninsula on the western side of Mexico is also fabulously beautiful.

Indeed. You see that boat in the middle with it's bow facing a bit to the left towards the camera, with the slightly green tinted windshield and hardtop; That's a Sea Ray Sundancer about 35-37 feet long and probably a 2014 +/-. That boat alone is $350K - $450K depending on features.

Then there's that speed boat in the middle to the left a bit, pointing to the left. That's either a Baja 38 or a Formula 380 tech, between $250K and $300K.

Add all the rest of those sailboats which probably average around $200K a piece and that's a lot of fiberglass and canvas and engines and electronics and stainless steel etc. Shame.

I grew up in Hawaii.

See if you can spare one week -- NOT COUNTING TWO DAYS FOR ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE. So we are talking 9 days total.

Four days on Oahu and 3 days on Maui. Oahu is not the largest island but it is the main island. It is the most populous and contains Honolulu, the state capital. You will go to all the main tourist attractions such as Hanauma Bay or the Polynesian Cultural Center. I had a G/F who was a dancer there once. You will see canoe training at the Ala Wai canal. I used to do that.

Once you are done on Oahu and flew to Maui, you will make a very early morning trip to Haleakala crater. It is an extinct volcano and the landscape is unearthly enough that the place was used to train astronauts for the moon landing.

Haleakala's summit crater, 3,000 feet deep and 21 miles around, is large enough to hold the island of Manhattan, skyscrapers and all. It harbors plants, such as the magnificent silversword, and wildlife found no place else on the planet. The strange vastness is so much like the face of the moon that the American astronauts trained here for their lunar landing. They placed a prism on the moon, and laser light beams are bounced to it from Science City, a research facility atop the volcano. The roundtrip takes two seconds.
The crater is above the clouds, so the temperature is going to be wintry cold. Bring appropriate jackets. The sun rise scene at the crater is memorable. That is why your trip will be very early morning, like around 2-3 am on the bus ride.

Now...If you can spare two weeks, then the next island to visit is Hawaii, or locally known as 'The Big Island'. There you will take a trip to see Kilauea, an active volcano. Kilauea is unique in that despite being active, it does not erupt, at least not yet, but just simply oozes lava. There is a local superstition that if you take any lava rock home, your home will cursed with bad luck by the goddess Pele until you return that rock to its origin. So do not take any lava rock home.

Have fun. :enjoy:

You mean like that Brady Bunch tiki that caused Greg to wipeout while surfing (or was he just a loser)?

Why would anybody leave Hawaii?

Why would anybody leave Hawaii?
I left. And I could not wait to leave. The Air Force was my way out.

When I was growing up, bus fare was a dime and on any weekend, I could take my surfboard, a pocketful of change, and hit all my favorite surf spots around the Oahu in one day. Not every locations, just my favorite ones. All the islands are mountainous and that means living is limited to near the beaches. Everything must be imported and this is modern times, not medieval Hawaii, where we live on items like beef, chicken, non-native vegetables, gasoline, milk, and so on. Cost of living was higher than the mainland and you can only see so much on an island.

That was not the life for me.

On the other hand, one of our neighbors was borne on Oahu and died on Oahu, never even saw any of the other islands. And he and his wife were perfectly happy with their lives.

It all depends on what you want out of your life. An island life is inherently limiting.

Still...

Lol! If somebody has a better growing up story I'd like to hear it! I don't ever remember paying less than $0.35

When I wanted to go swimming I had to sneak into the local heavily chlorinated city YMCA pool. Surfboards were not allowed.
