US was Pakistan allies for 60 years. Only Now, it become BAD. So that was fine ??
We are going off-topic here but I think this US-Pakistan 'allies' needs further exploring.
There have been periods of close associations between the two countries in purely 'transactional' ways. In the 50's and parts of the 60's, Pakistan was a bulwark against communism. In return. Pakistan extracted a lot from the American.
Then a lull came from about early 70s till late 70's. In fact, ZAB ruled over a fairly anti-American Pakistan and his personal 'socialist' rhetoric was often testimony to that.
In late 70's the Soviets invaded Afghanistan and hence another transaction ensued. Fast forward 10 years, the Soviets leave Afghanistan, and Pakistan is dumped.
More than a decade later, 9/11 happens and another transaction starts. Seems like ending as Americans are about to wind down their presence in the region--and hence Pakistan is in the hot-seat again. Pakistan is the new Cambodia of the 60's, although the support to the Haqqanis is nothing new. Someone has to be blamed, right? Someone else.
In short, Pakistan and America have never been allies like America and Japan or Pakistan and China have been.
Relationship has been transanctional. And Pakistan's strategic location makes it possible that Pakistan may be asked to be another 'frontline' state against something else? May be against China? May be, deep down, there is some truth in the 'Contain-China' theory and the American presence in Afghanistan.
