India faces a power crisis of such magnitude that it can be termed as one of the biggest threats to the nation's economic growth and progress. Today, decades after Independence hundreds of Indian villages still do not have electricity, especially in the rural areas.

Among the cities, with the sole exception of Mumbai, almost all Indian cities suffer daily power cuts, affecting industry, business, education and life in general.

And this, despite the fact that India has the fifth largest electricity-generation capacity in the world. It has an installed capacity of over 152 gigawatts (1 gigawatt is equal to 1 billion watts).

In 2008 (which are the latest figures available), India produced 787,546,450,000 kWh of electricity, which is about 4 per cent of the total power generation in the world. Only four other countries produce more electricity than India.

India is also the world's fifth largest consumer of electricity. In 2007, India consumed 568,000,000 megawatt hours of electricity, which works out to an average of about 51 watts per person.

Comparatively, the per capita electricity consumption in the United States is 1,460 watts, and in China it is 700 watts.

India has amongst the lower per capita power consumption rates in the world. Only Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Congo, Bangladesh, Kenya, Pakistan, Myanmar, Sudan, Cameroon, Nepal, and some other sub-Saharan countries have lower power consumption than India.

stupid writer should come to Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot etc or alomst everywhere in Gujarat to see that not a single minute power cut happen there(probably 5-10 minute in a month).

Despite being world's 5th largest electricity producer.....we face shortages in many parts of our country excluding Maharastra and Gujarat and excluding all the state capitals and main cities

If I recall correctly, wasn't there a blackout early this year which caused more than half of India to go without power for days? Reliability of electricity supply as more important than the sheer numbers.

u r right ........blackout happened due to the mismanagement of north and western grid.....authorities where not able to isolate a fault in the indian state of UP from the main grid, which caused the whole northern and subsequently the western grid to collapse for 2 days.........

look dear, energy crisis in Pakistan is artificial, everyone knows... and in Pakistan, even a thailaa rider also knew how too produce cheap electricity in Pakistan...all we need is good leadership, a patriotic, devoted and Pakistani leadership...and that day will inshaALLAH come sooner.
Second thing, i don't think there is any need to start such conversation here named "World's top 15 electricity producers, India 5th" because you know India is second in population in the world, and 138th by GDP and you are talking that India is 5th in electricity production...?

Yes clearly. Everyone knows. Electricity produced by small scale generators is NEVER cheap. It is in fact the most expensive way to produce electricity.
You talk as if there are no generators in India. Everyone just.. shuts down their businesses when there is no power.

And lastly, I agree this is nothing to be proud of. We really need more investment in the power sector.

We don't have any powercuts in my place,kerala.

In terms of installed capacity,India has 228.722 GW as of September 2013,making it the world's 5th largest.Non renewable sources consitute 87% of India's power production.

Sadly,coal constitute 57% of India's powerplants (77% of chinas)

Still 25% of India's rural population lacks electricity and over 6% urban population lacks electricity.

More than electricity production the issues are in its distribution.

The lines , transformers and grid is old which leads to losses & wastage.
