TASS: World - New computer spying virus targeting Russia, Saudi Arabia uncovered — media

November 24, 8:44 UTC+3
Leading computer security company Symantec says the bug may be run by a Western intelligence agency

LONDON, November 24. /TASS/. The world’s most sophisticated computer malware, called Regin, which targets telecom companies in Russia and Saudi Arabia has been discovered, a report by the Financial Times says, citing a leading computer security company Symantec.

The bug is probably run by a Western intelligence agency and is more advanced in engineering terms than Stuxnet, which was designed by US and Israel government hackers in 2010 to target Iran’s nuclear program, Symantec says.

“Regin could be customised to target different organizations and had hacked Microsoft email exchange servers and mobile phone conversations on major international networks,” the company says.

The bug has been deployed against Internet service providers and telecoms companies mainly in Russia and Saudi Arabia as well as Mexico, Ireland and Iran, according to the report, although it is unclear how Regin infected the systems.

“We are probably looking at some sort of western agency,” said Orla Cox, director of security response at Symantec, describing Regin as one of the most “extraordinary” pieces of hacking software developed, and probably “months or years in the making”.

“Sometimes there is virtually nothing left behind - no clues. Sometimes an infection can disappear completely almost as soon as you start looking at it, it’s gone. That shows you what you are dealing with,” she said.

Eugene Kaspersky, the head of Kaspersky Labs, the Russian company that helped uncover the Stuxnet worm, told the newspaper that criminals are currently hacking industrial control systems for financial gain.

Kaspersky warned that the computer networks that control energy plants and factories are becoming targets for organised crime gangs armed with skilled hackers. Networks that run industrial companies have encountered “more and more very targeted attacks,” he said.

Why they are targeting Saudi Arabia?I thought America already have control on Saudi Arabia.

most of these techs generally built by Security Firms using inputs from various companies for some country's request.like Stuxnet was built for Siemens' SCADA systems and Step-7 Software only.

.
Deletes itself "as soon as you start looking for it". Suggestion to counter this threat? Search the computer for Regin and voila, it's gone.

Repeat once everyday. Thrice for good measure.

Conclusion: Virus clearly not sophisticated enough.

How is this news surprising if it turns out to be authentic? The US was caught spying on their main allies in Western Europe, Canada (if I am not wrong) and the EU itself not long ago. Several leading Western European head of states and ministers had their phones tapped. Merkel being one of them and the Danish prime minster as well.
You probably have internal spy rings inside the US itself. Russia is with all due probability also spying internally and externally (among allies too). KSA is doing the same I believe.

Anyway Prince Saud ibn Faisal met with Lavrov this Friday.

Oil price fall, Syrian crisis focus of Saudi-Russia talks | Arab News

KSA, the GCC and the Arab world as a whole knows very well that US cannot be trusted fully and that's why we have close relations with several powers and have huge trade volumes in the case of KSA and the GCC with countries such as France, UK, Japan, India, South Korea and the biggest of them all China. We are also expanding our ties with developing states and fellow Arab and Muslim countries constantly.

Anyway the entire internet is monitored. We live in a society currently were everything that involves technology can and is being monitored. In fact I could easily monitor you. Hacking is a huge business and I have been studying that feel for a while now. If I still lived in California I would have attended the DEFCON.

When the US media whines and cries about China having the potential to shut off the US power grid, and suddenly they pull off these stunts against innocent and defenseless countries that may not cyber defenses as sophisticated as the US, suddenly I feel a lot less sympathy for the US.

More cyber attacks on Pakistan originate from US than from India. Pakistan is in US pocket, then why?

Ans: No one, not even your chuddie-Buddies provide you with sensitive info. You have to indulge in sabotage to get high grade info, even from allies.
