Nepal..we're coming
SHIGATSE (TIBET), May 18: The construction of the Lhasa -Shigatse railway, which is expected to link Nepal with the Chinese border, is in full swing.
Construction works have already completed up to the Khara Village of Qushui County, which is 82 kilometers from Tibetan capital Lhasa.
The Chinese government had started the ambitious railway project in September 2010 with the aim of completing the project by 2015. The US $ 2.1 billion project is expected to be expanded westward from Shigatse to connect with the Tibet-Nepal border.
The Chinese government is currently carrying out study for expansion of the railway project. Tatopani in Sindhupalchok and Kerung in Rasua district are the nearest border points from Shigatse. Thirteen stations are being constructed on the Lhasa -Shigatse rail route. Tatopani is 392 kilometers from Shigatse.
“Nepal government has proposed linking the railway with Khasa on the Nepal-China border. We are carrying out a study in this regard,” Chinese Vice-minister in the State Council Information Office Cui Yuying told visiting Nepali journalists. Nepali political parties and leaders have time and again requested the Chinese government to connect the Nepal-China border with the railway.
Some Nepali leaders have even proposed linking Lumbini, the birth place of Lord Buddha, with the railway. They have said that such a railway link would facilitate trade between India, Nepal and China.
As there are huge rocky mountains along the Khara- Shigatse section, underground railway tunnel would be built for the railway
