The Helistat is truly a Frankenstein.
envelope from a ZR-2 blimp.. four Sh-58 fuselages.. mated to a huge steel frame..
The crash was caused by one pilot applying too much throttle on takeoff..
the imbalance created a resonance that led to the said pilots heli-part breaking free and flying off to a thousand feet before careening to the ground.
Piasecki wanted to try again.. but the US forest service simply said.. NO THANKS.
