COIMBATORE: The work on launch of submarine variant of supersonic cruise missile BrahMos was in the final stages, a top official of the Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace said today.

"Yes we are on the job and it is in the final stages," BrahMos Aerospace CEO and MD Dr A Sivathanu Pillai told reporters here when asked about the submarine launched-missile.

Sea and ground-launched versions have been successfully tested and put into service with the Indian Army and Navy. The flight tests of the airborne version will be completed by the end of 2012.

Pillai said the Hypersonic version of Brahmos-2 cruise missile will be ready for launch in another five years.

With the research on propulsion of scramjet underway, the hypersonic missile, with four times speed that the present Supersonic missile, would be ready for induction into Indian forces by 2017.

With a 300 million Dollars investment, the company, a Indo-Russian joint venture, was doing a business of five billion dollars at present, he said.

However, he said the company would think of large scale exports only after meeting the requirements of Indian armed forces.

if Brahmos range is really 300KMs, then I will say Indian military is an idiot..
But it isn't true no ? ;)

If the sub can get close to an enemy ship and unleash 2 of these missiles. It will be a nightmare for the enemy.

Actually the official range is 290 Km. And thats a very good range for a AShM ..

290km is still a very good range..no way a Battle group can effectively track a submarine upto 290km,unless they stumble upon it..

290km is the declared official range (due to political reasons) but there have been numerous indications over the years that the actual range is considerably more but of course we would only ever find out times of crisis.

so how much is the actual range (any guess)??

Of course I have no way of really knowing but I have heard ranges ranging from 500-1000+ kms. Like I say though there is very little way of confirming this.

If say the actual range is 700km (which makes it a long range cruise missile) than India working on Nirbhay missile doesn't make sense since it is of around the same range.

Nirbhay is terrain hugging subsonic cruise missile whereas BrahMos is supersonic. Both are in totally different categories.
Nirbhay is like american tomahawk missile.

Nirhbay is different it is sub-sonic, has a 1000+km range and loitering capabilities etc

This is the first time I have heard this.

Blk-III is supposed to have a range of 550 Kms. Another block has been planned with this huge range..?

I hope they dont mass produce it later, seriously with 290km range its not going to do any job better
. I hope they keep it as a test bed, and start developing submarine launch facility for Nirbhay from now on so that we can induct both land and sea variant at same time...
