'Wolf Warrior 2' earns $500m, breaks box office record

.
Two things on this point: 99.7% of the box office take for WW2 was in China, with only $2.3 million in box office receipts to date from other countries (many of these likely to be Chinese ex-pats). The film may have release dates coming in other countries, but the fact that WW2 is intended almost exclusively for Chinese audiences means it is preaching to the converted. Future productions intended to project Chinese soft power will need to appeal to foreign audiences as well as Chinese audiences, something that has eluded film makers.

Secondly, there was nothing subliminal about the political message in this film. It was rather obvious to the point of being clumsy: 'we are China, we are friend to Africa' followed by the African mob laying down their guns in deference. It comes across as looking rather silly, film makers will need to learn to be more subtle if they expect cynical foreign audiences to buy into the soft power idea.

it was opened with limited screening in other countries.. because i suppose the producers knew the money is in the china market. still, a 30 million film making 800 million+ is insane. i don't think there's another film in that budget range that have done this.

An unprecedented achievement, in terms of ROI it is unequaled.

A minor point, and one that does not diminish its success, the current box office take is $682 million not 800 million. I am somewhat OCD about accuracy with numbers.

Just to add to my thoughts on this film, watching a familiar trope play out through a different cultural lens was quite fascinating. Yes this film had its faults, some technical and some were filtering by government agencies, but at the end of the day it struck a chord with its target audience. A huge game changer for the Chinese film industry.

It is going to be interesting to see how things evolve from here. Will we see larger budget Chinese action films with different tropes, such as Sci-fi, space operas, superhero films, dystopian near future and post-apocalyptic films (highly unlikely now that I think about it), large scale military based action (highly likely) and others?

quoting the final box office projections.

Indeed, it has been screened in just a few places in the overseas. Like you say, the producers had the domestic viewers in mind and they probably did not anticipate such return.

Wolf Warrior 3 may have a more international display objectives. In any case, globally, across the world, the movie has been watched online extensively and that's the unseen effect of the movie.

There are more online movie watchers than movie goers, I am one of them. Never paid for a foreign production and I like to watch them online.

The message conveyed via Wolf Warrior has been great and a boost to China's image.

Most of the world is sick and tired of being saved by the US action heroes.

There is some truth in that, the need for more diversity in these roles is more widely recognized today.

I would be interested in watching good quality productions with Chinese (or other nationalities) heroes, the important thing is that the films are scripted and produced to the highest standards. And not so much of the nationalism in films would be nice, we've already had decades of that from Hollywood. Just good stories please.

The problem is that you need to know the Chinese mentality in this, under the current regime, there are never going to be good plot for non-Chinese, because they did set production guideline for local productions. They banned all sci-fi genre and movie with paranormal theme, and they also banning all portray of Chinese and Chinese Communist Party in a bad light, there have to be "Cultural Value" in the movie if you want it to make in China.

If there are any Chinese Hero from Chinese Production, then you will see he is ultra-nationalistic because that is the guideline came from CCP, and they control the movie making in China.

Much like world movie production, most country, (Australia and New Zealand included) have to be depending on their own country to subsidise their production, which mean it is not the producer who produce a movie, but it is the government official who produce the movie. That is the reason why Hollywood have been running amok, because most country would not produce a "balance" situation where people are not so patriotic, and nationalistic. I mean, if you look at The Walking Dead, there are nothing patriotic in the movie, it's about survival, but if it stay where it is, you will never make this in China, because zombie, as a genre, was banned from China.

Have you tried British Movie and Swedish Movie? They are quite good IMO.

Interesting points. I actually went to see WW2 with an open mind, I was intensely curious to see what it was like. But if they keep making nationalistic communist party political broadcasts masquerading as entertainment its going to get tired very quickly.

Yeah I do enjoy British film making, was Hammer of the gods from Sweden?

Well, I watches Wolf Warrior 2 just because one of my mate told me there is a good action flick, and I felt the movie is like Saints and Soldiers, just replace the patriotic tone in WW2 to Religious tone in SaS. The problem is, the cultural rules would really, I MEANT REALLY, hurt Chinese movie bankability overseas, effectively, the Chinese Movie is a mouthpiece of Chinese government, and you do not control world population like that, you control with subliminal message. The overtone would actually draw foreigner further away instead of showing the Chinese Prowess.

And I think Hammer of Gods is a British film about Viking in Britain.

The point is to counter US movies that act as mouthpieces of the US regime as part of the US global domination.

The neo-fascist tendency went a few notches up since 2001 and 2008 after the neoliberal US (and the West in general) has shown more fascist inclinations with their decline in comprehensive power against the non-West.

US productions are soaked with US regime propaganda - even those that appear to be critical of the US.

Most of the world is tired of the cliche and cheuvenism-soaked US productions. There is a need to counter that and the response is about to come from China.

It does not matter what the neo-fascist old men lurking on the forum and writing long tirades (at times appearing to talk to itself via mirror accounts) think of Wolf Warrior and the likes to come.

What matters is what the majority would think. And, as the surveys on the greatest threat to world peace show, China and the resisting bloc countries have a huge potential.

China is readying to meet the demand.

there is another one also on tv called salvation. it's about a big asteroid on path to hit earth. the good amercans plan to save the earth (usa) by breaking the rock into multiple pieces where the big chunks will hit china and russia. there are other ways, but they choose that one because china and russia are bad. they deserve it :D

Not just that.

Most of their productions, even innocent-looking ones, contain at least one scene or a dialogue that is politically-charged, racist or insulting to other nations, making/generating bad stereotypes about others, generating enemies and, vilifying and bad-mouthing real-world rival nations.

Hollywood is a political tool. The neo-liberals running Hollywood are much closer to acting like brutal fascists than the fiercest rednecks.

That's why I prefer Bush-Trump over Obama-Hillary.
