If there was no Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Hyderabad State would perhaps not have merged with India, union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said Friday.

Paying rich tributes to India's first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary, Singh recalled that Hyderabad State merged with the Indian Union more than a year after Independence.

Singh flagged off the 'Run for Unity' and participated in the passing out parade of Indian Police Service Officers at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy here.

He said it was because of the foresightedness of Patel that Hyderabad became part of India.

Singh said Patel single-handedly achieved the merger of 562 princely states into the Indian Union in 70 days with minimum violence and maximum willingness.

"If one person is to get credit for shaping the geography of India as we see it today, it should go to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel," he said at the passing out parade of trainee police officers.

He noted that after 10 years the academy is holding the passing out parade on Patel's birth anniversary and asked the academy director to ensure that the parade is held every year on this day.

The home minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to observe Patel's birth anniversary as 'National Unity Day'.

At both the events, Singh administered the unity day pledge to the gathering.

Earlier, he flagged off the run after paying tributes to Patel at his statue near the assembly building.

A large number of people, majority of them BJP workers, participated in the run. Many of them held the national flag in their hands.

BJP Telangana unit president G. Kishan Reddy, party MP Bandaru Dattatreya and actor Krishnam Raju were also present on the occasion.

Everybody knows this. What are we to discuss?

. . .
But our Congress will claim that it was possible only because of King Nehru ...
Both had their jobs. Both did well in what they were tasked to do.

Since uniting India politically was Patel's responsibility - I am lauding him for amazing work done.

Eventually, had he not decided to 'meet swords with swords', Nizam might have succeeded in getting an independent country or at best a dominion.

Just another Indian occupied state besides Junagadh, Manavadar, and Kashmir. Those who talk about plebiscite in Kashmir need to look at Indian leader's track record. No wonder India supports apartheid Israel.
Yes, Hyderabadis are all yearning for freedom from Indian occupation. Pakistan should send mujahids and jihadis to help them. Many PDF members are Hyderabadis, you can co-ordinate the operation with them. They will act as saboteurs when the glorious liberators arrive from the pureland.

Of course those states were occupied. To think otherwise is ludicrous.

There needed to be a Unified India, an India where Indians lived with democracy and ruled by a Constitution, not feudal states with Kings.

India supports Israel because India stands against terrorism - the kind of weapon favoured by other parties in the conflict.

The same way Pakistan's shared moral values lead it to support Saudi Arabia - a country which oppresses women and lives with medieval tribal practices like beheading, hand chopping and blood money.

Your Hindutva sarkar is doing what Pakistan could have never done. There is no need to send support, things will emerge from within. Let terrorist-turned Modi complete his term.

India supports itself & has done so in J&K, Hyd & Junagadh even when Israel was not even born.

@ subject, its right Patel was the man instrumental in welding India together as we see it today - J&K, Hyderabad, Junagadh - he was the key.

The nation ought to be forever indebted to him.

Merging the princely states needed a firm hand & patel provided just that along with decisive leadership as validated by Sam in his memoirs too.
