With Wink and a Handshake , India-Russia agrees to double BrahMos range on existing Inventory

Kudos, only if extended range brahmos can do sea skimming flight for 200 to 300km.

On Contrary to Indian media reports , that India and Russia will only enhance BrahMos range in its next variant. Indian and Russian officials who meet on sidelines of Intergovernmental Commission on Military-Technical Cooperation on 26th October have agreed to double current range of BrahMos from 290 km to 600 km in all existing BrahMos missiles already inducted into Indian Armed forces. India’s entry into the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), negates need to maintain further cap on BrahMos range to 290 km and all BrahMos variants like Land attack based version developed for Indian Army and Airforce ,Anti-ship attack version for Indian Navy or Air launched version of BrahMos will all have enhanced 600km range . Defence Analyst Ranesh Rajan believes range limitation cap was eyewash since Russia or India ever disclosed how a missile based on 600 km Russian P-800 Oniks Supersonic cruise missile had half its range even when missile dimension of both missiles was same . Rajan speaking to idrw.org confirmed that few trials of BrahMos with 600km range might be needed soon to validate all onboard sensors to check if missile performance remains same after the enhanced range . Speculation among Defence Analyst was that BrahMos range was kept under 290 due to software which could cut off fuel after it reached 290 kms but many other believed that smaller fuel tanks could have been used to limit its range but all did agree that both restrictions if ever were imposed by Russia could have been easily overcome by India, which has worked on missile for nearly two decades

ha ha ha why am i not surprosed ... so a miraceulous software upgrade and some aerodynamic tweeking will double the range ... and that happens only after signing of MTCR :sarcastic:

what is the width of pakistan ?

Depends on if one includes the strategic depth or not.

This is nothing to be proud of.

Indian contribution to these JV is almost nil if we take out the financial contribution.

India should strive for the day when it could sport Indian source code, engine and seeker.

With all the IT base one would think India could at least make headway on the IT front.

Russia denying the source code to India is the sad reality of Indian dependence on defense imports...
f16 are coming with full source code .. so dont worry.

Really? LM plant would be under 100% MII. India would not even get financial stake let alone source code..

You have too high expectations...

BJP did the following to facilitate the F-16 deal

1) Agree to sign CISMOA & BECA agreements

2) Changed DPP to allow 100% FDI under MII

3) Cancel MMRCA RFP to allow F-16s to make a comeback

. . . .
I don't know but I feel brahmos always had this range. Probably after this announcement we are just admitting it's range in public.
Thats why brahmos mini was proposed with half the weight and 300 km range.

It always had this range since block III version- Perhaps a reason why no export has been done-

It was probably fuel tanks too. They can now be retrofitted for longer range.

Pretty sure even before MTCR signing.... changing to 600km range could have been done at a relative moments notice by India....and may have been done covertly even.

You just need to look at where it was deployed in the eastern theatre and where its targets were. A 5th grader would tell you, required range for the missile to be realistically deployed was closer to 500 kms.

Now, its being made public, that's all.

What India needs is this range.

Thats a overkill, we have enuf big land mass to hide the missiles. Sea based deterrent is good for nuke missiles.

By way dont you think if pakistan deploys any Anti-Missile shield then it will be hard to traverse 2000km without detection?

May be India already has it ,now we are just putting up stmts to make it legit?

Why sea skimming for those distances? Such flight profiles increase the risk of impact with water prior to reaching the target, decrease scanning distances for the missile's seeker, and don't really take advantage of any restrictions that weren't already in place on ships, such as a minimum low-altitude scan distance - being about 28 to 46 km from a ship, depending on the height of the radar.

The missile can still be picked up by surveillance aircraft, like this DA20, which doubles as an electronic support aircraft (which could be used to negatively effect a sea skimming missile during cruise and vector it into the waves).

Terminal sea skimming, like is found on most missiles is preferable due to its better fuel economy, lower software and processing requirements, being a less risky flight path (less chance of crashing due to rouge waves, software or guidance errors) and greater scan and targeting ranges, as being higher allows you to see farther.

To have Brahmos with that flight profile for that long would also require long-range targeting for moving targets, and would mean either real-time satellite, ship, submarine, coastal spotters if the target is close enough, or aircraft must be vectored to assist in providing tracking updates as the missile transits, as being that low it can't see itself.

However, for land attack missiles which can use tercom or internal guidance, nap-of-the-Earth flight profiles are preferred, as noted on the vaunted Tomahawk.

They use terrain masking and ground clutter to mask their approach to a target, which the sea does too, but less so then on land.

Plz dont make Claims which are Hillarious.
F16 , May come but for that MMRCA cancellation was never needed ( Hint : Rafale MII )

A good political plan would always has multiple goals. MMRCA cancellation had multiple reasons

1) Replace HAL with a private player (Appease the party funders)

2) Relax the terms of ToT and type of offsets (Appease the Supplier)

3) Increase the Supplier built numbers (Appease France and IAF)

4) Pave the way for other MMRCA contenders (Appease US)

RAFALE MII would happen but only after the F-16 deal is done.
