NEW DELHI: Faced with a fast-depleting underwater combat arm even as both China and Pakistan bolster their fleets, India is looking at major rejig of its submarine production plans to ensure its operational readiness does not get further eroded in the coming years.

For starters, the case for equipping the last two of the six French Scorpene submarines being built at Mazagon Docks with the crucial air-independent propulsion systems is being "progressed'', say defence ministry sources.

The six diesel-electric Scorpenes are slated for delivery in the 2015-20 timeframe under the ongoing Rs 23,562-crore ($5 billion) 'Project-75', three years behind schedule. AIP (air-independent propulsion) in the fifth and sixth vessels, at a cost of an additional Rs 1,000 crore ($200 million) each, will give them a deadlier punch and stealth because they will be able to stay submerged much longer before surfacing to get oxygen to recharge their batteries.

India is likely to go in for three additional Scorpenes after the first six. "While no decision has yet been taken, it makes economic sense since six of them are being built at MDL. The second submarine workshop at MDL will get operational soon,'' said a source.

It will also be operationally expedient since, as was first reported by TOI earlier, the long-delayed follow-on 'Project-75India' to acquire six new-generation stealth submarines will take at least another two to three years to be finalized. It will take another seven years, if not more, after that for the first new submarine to roll out.

'Going in for three more Scorpenes is one way out of the logjam over P-75I, with Navy and MoD yet to agree on the shipyards to execute the project. The French companies will charge hefty amounts for the ToT (transfer of technology) packages for the three more Scorpenes,'' he said.

The P-75I programme may also be expanded to include nine submarines, all equipped with both tube-launched missiles for land-attack capabilities as well as AIP, instead of the six planned for well over Rs 50,000 crore ($10 billion).

Nothing more refreshing than something out of the TOIlet.

Don't fart here. Just so that you know the subscription of ToI is 3,146,000 daily - largest circulation among all English-language newspaper in the world, across all formats (broadsheet, tabloid, compact, Berliner and online). The circulation of NYT too is only half of this at 1,645,152

Suck it now!

Well faux news is the most popular news network in US, I guess people likes sensationalized crap more.

No need to give the follow on order for next three scorpene to MDL. These idiots insisted on ToT again in Project 75, when are they gonna use these ToTs and experience to build there own submarine. Now its time for MDL to make their own submarine. The follow on order should be placed directly to DCNS as there's no sense in spending a billion dollar for a single SSK. Nothing new can be learnt by these idiots if we give the them the follow on order too. Also MDL is busy till 2022, if we MOD is really concerned about the country's depleting sub fleet then the best thing to do is place the follow on order directly to DCNS as it will be executed quickly and will cost us around 400-500 million $ a sub rather than 900-1000 million $ a sub.
In P75I also if we want a speedy execution then the best thing is the first two sub should be built in the original vendor selected and simultaneously the work on next four should start in L&T while the workers can also get experience by stationing in the original vendor shipyard while the work on first two is carried out.

S1000 (the newer version of Amur 1650)is offered to India in 3 billion $. U214 will also cost us around 3 billion $ and if we decide to go for Russian Amur 1650 then we can bring down the cost to 2-2.5 billion $...A 200-250 million $ to set up infrastructure if we want to go with PSUs and if we go with L&T we don't even need that.

Thanks for the feedback angeldemon_007

I may have rounded them like $4.6 to $5 B. Nice to read your views!

indeed good news.
no money spent on weapons == less money spent on education and development.

the regime in new delhi is again failing india/indians.

good news indeed.

India's submarine force will never surpass China's.

We don't have to. I am sure that's not the intention. But we will have enough submarines to safeguard our interests in the Indian ocean region. May be after 2050, who knows we could overtake China too.

Project-75I I would love to see the German Type 214 submarine with full AIP and ideally 6 of these babies.
