There are around 2.8 million illegal immigrants living in Karachi, a senior official of the National Authority for Registration of Aliens (Nara) revealed during a meeting on Tuesday.
The meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Raja Muhammad Abbas was held at the Sindh Secretariat to review the law and order situation in the city as the apex courts Karachi registry would resume hearing on Wednesday (today) on the implementation of its last years judgement regarding targeted killings in the metropolis.
The participants of the meeting mainly focused on the issue of illegal immigrants in the city in light of the superior judiciarys observations.
During the hearing of suo moto case No 16/2011, the Supreme Court had observed that the presence of a large number of illegal aliens in the metropolis was one of the major causes behind the deteriorating law and order situation in the provincial capital.
The apex court had directed the provincial government to submit a report to this effect before October 31 (today).
The senior official of Nara Karachi gave a comprehensive briefing to the participants of the meeting on the issue, informed sources told The News.
Accuracy questioned
However, some participants of the meeting questioned the accuracy of the figures he had revealed about the aliens in the city.
The sources said one official was of the view that many illegal immigrants from Bangladesh had returned home after the improvement of the economic prospects in their country.
A Nara official on the condition of anonymity told The News that the authoritys was responsible for registering illegal immigrants and it was doing its job.
Its the responsibility of police and other law enforcement agencies to take action if the illegal immigrants are involved in any criminal activity.
The additional inspector general of police of the Special Branch, Rasool Bux Saand, who also participated in the meeting, told the participants that data on illegal immigrants was being compiled.
The provincial police chief, the additional IGP and senior officials of the home department, Nara, the National Database and Registration Authority and the Federal Investigation Agency also attended the meeting.
Chief minister Qaim Ali Shah, who is also the in-charge of the home department, had recently stated publicly that around two million illegal immigrants were living in Karachi.
He had also maintained that the citizens of Karachi were not willing to lodge FIRs against criminals and reluctant to provide evidence to the courts.
