Russia shot up Georgians (a close U.S. ally and NATO applicant), who have received a billion dollars of U.S. aid and is a member of the U.N.

Did the U.S. do anything to protect Georgia?

Why would the U.S. do anything to protect communist Vietnam, who has received ZERO aid from the United States?

How important is the Philippines to the United States if the U.S. only gave Aquino $30 million in foreign military aid for 2012 after he begged like a dog?

There are no valid comparisons between Georgia and the Asians. The US was hesitant in Georgia because of the unilateral actions in the region, as in Yugoslavia, as in without UN consent. Compounded by the moral difficulties with Iraq.

President Hu Jintao is smarter than that Chinese general( Major General Luo Yuan) who threatened us with war. He knows that if they fire the first shot, China will fall. Not because the Philippines is stronger but because China will be the enemy of the world.
The CCP knows so well a war either small or big broke out in regard to the SCS; it will spell the end of China growth and a catalyst for China brokeup: Tibet, Manchu, Inner Mongolia and of course Taiwan people will eventually have a chance to get away from repressive Han empire.

In fact, just by saying they(US) will help defend the Philippines if another country attacks us is probably China's biggest deterrent right now from declaring war.

What they(Chinese) fail to understand this so called clever country(China) is that the world is rallying together against them, the more they try to bully nations the more enemies they are making.

I strongly doubt China will find an ally if war broke up with her and the US. I don't think North Korea, Pakistan, Syria and Iran will help defend China. And I also don't think China will win the war.

MANILA, Philippines - China should launch "decisive action" against the Philippines to reinforce Beijing's claim on the disputed Scarborough Shoal, a hardline Chinese army general said Friday.

People's Liberation Army (PLA) Major General Luo Yuan, in a commentary published by state-owned website china.org.cn, said China has not abandoned the idea of "war at all costs" to protect its interests.

While it is U.S. who had been boned in korean war. With China's threat full confrontation involvement into vietnam and send armies into vietnam if U.S. dare to invade north vietnam, throughout the vietnam war, U.S. dare not send its troops for invasion.

To answer the article, and assuming the US does not want to get involved but wants to keep to its treaty commitments (that form the core basis of its military power the world over) the US will probably not intervene even if the Philippines requested it should the PLAN fire on Filipino fishing vessels attempting to enter the shoal as they are not public vessels (vessels owned by the government are the only vessels specifically covered by the treaty).

If the Filipino navy sends ships to either escort fishing vessels and/or contest the shoal physically [in a non-violent manner] and the PLAN fires on them, then the US navy will have to get involved once the Philippines requests involvement.

Let's see, your military encouragement to Georgians nearly had them obliterated by Russia; North Korea still exists and Japan's concerns against the Communists is only increasing; perhaps more than what it used to be during Soviet era. Not to mention, Taiwan is getting weary of US indecision to supply it weapons.

Indeed the foundation of US military and strategic might has been its commitment towards its allies but if things go bad here and you don't intervene in any visible manner, the remaining belt of allies won't be very pleased with you.

The Filipinos know the U.S. position is neutrality. When someone gives you a measly $30 million in military aid to fight China, it means you're on your own.

The Filipinos are desperate and their latest long-shot idea is to ask help from the U.N.

Someone should tell the Filipinos that China is one of the United Nations Security Council Permanent Five (P-5) members with a permanent veto. When you go against China, the U.N. is automatically closed off. There's a Chinese veto waiting for you.
