No nuclear armed country is going to let anyone annex their provinces.

Soviet Union's Russia had one of the largest stockpiles of nuclear weapons. That didnt deter other states making up the SU from declaring independence in 1991-92 and carving up independent states.

Not that Afghanistan would be even close to being able to overpower the Pakistani Army in the first place though.

Again, Afghanistan is NOT taliban. And though, the taliban may not be able to take on the PA's military might directly, they might still hold sway over large areas of tribal lands effectively denying PA access to these lands. That's what is happening now. With a parallel system of administration and finances "effectively enforced" & in place, the taliban can effectively weaken the legitimate govt.'s sovereignty over these lands. What then? In such a scenario, how long before the tribal areas are declared an independent 'Caliphate'?

That being said, for Pakistan to survive as a viable state, it is in its best interests to root out the religious fundamentalism. The govt recognizes that, the 'establishment' recognizes that. But here comes the proverbial question "who will bell the cat"?

thats hypothetical just like a "failed state" phrase . There is more realistic scenario which is " "Taliban" will reclaim Afghanistan after the USA leaves in 2015 -16. And then all Afghan power hungry groups including Northern warlords along with Taliban will be fighting each other one way or the other and US of A plus regional countries will pour in own resources (money, intelligence, human resources) to fuel own proxies.

Loss of social fabric, economy, a perpetual sense of fear, inability to enforce the law of the land ,citizens living in fear etc are some determinants.

Afghan army want to eradicate the Taliban, Indian never was Taliban ally, Iran won't allow them in, only Pakistan allow Taliban to run over to Pakistan with the US military hunting them down. FATA is a key of separation and Pakistan will never thought for this.Because if independent given to FATA there may more who needs independent and will destroy Pakistan.

Pak Army should clean FATA from Taliban ( Militant ), People of FATA are the bravest people in the world and they always play a key roll in Pakistan Remember ( Azad Kashmir ) ..

hint: talibans don't do anything for free and without any interest while in FATA they used to be king of areas that's why they are crying and fighting to save their crown.

IA has killed plenty of Afghans, Uzbeks and Chechens infiltrating into Kashmir. After the Soviet war in afghanistan ended, the ISI funnelled those militants into Kashmir, to make it a living hell. It took some time, but India killed every single one of them. After they were used as "strategic assets" by the ISI, many of them marrid and setted in your FATA. And now they are jihading your own country.
