Myths of developments of Gujarat under Modi exposed:

What has Modi done for Gujarat:

The number of jobless people in Swarnim Gujarat state has risen by 97,095 in the last two years according to a government agency. In other words, on an average the number of unemployed people has been rising by over 4,000 per month.

In 2007-08, there were 7, 92,033 jobless people in Gujarat but in 2008-09 this had increased to 8, 24,769. But according to the latest figures (for the 11-month period ended February 2010) available with the state's labour and employment department, the number of unemployed people in the state is now 8, 89,128.

The number of jobless people is now close to 9 lakh.

Gujarat has a high 31.8 per cent population living below poverty line, says a Planning Commission report. This is higher than several major states such as Jammu & Kashmir (13.2 per cent), Kerala (19.7 per cent), Punjab (20.9 per cent), Himachal Pradesh (22.9 per cent), Haryana (24.1 per cent), Tamil Nadu (28.9 per cent) and Andhra Pradesh (29.9 per cent).

Poverty line for Gujarat – monthly expenditure of Rs 501.58 per person in rural and Rs 659.18 in urban areas – is based on National Sample Survey (NSS) norms fixed in 2005-06, which includes ‘nutritional, educational and health outcomes’, to quote from the report.

Senior expert Prof Indira Hirway says, “High incidence of poverty in rural Gujarat shows that the recent boost in agricultural production has failed to benefit the poorest of the poor, particularly farm labourers.”

Media Scan Bangalore: Unemployment Rising In Vibrant Gujarat

It was Shaktisinh Gohil’s turn. Following is his Facebook message on Vibrant Gujarat summit:

“Myth versus Reality : Vibrant Gujarat is about propaganda and favours to select group of industrialists. Educated unemployed youth figure has gone up to 8.5 lakh plus in Gujarat(and this is the govt figure only registered at employment bureaus). The real figure could be more starking. Gujarat is vibrant only for a few…. Otherwise, home grown Small and Medium Enterprises(SME) and industries face a host of problems.”

NEW DELHI: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP )) leader LK Advani said Sunday that the three Muslim players in the Indian World Cup team have a Gujarat connection and that they are there because of their talent, not because of any reservations.

In the latest post on his blog, Advani referred to speech of his party colleague Shahnawaz Hussain during debate in the Lok Sabha on the condition of Muslims in the country.

"In his speech, Shahnawaz Hussain said 'the World Cup cricket tournament is going on these days. The eleven players in Team India include Zahir Khan, Munaaf Patel and Yusuf Pathan. Three out of eleven makes it 30.6 percent. And this is on the basis of their talent, not on the basis of any reservation'. Incidentally, all these three players are from Gujarat!", Advani said.

While Munaaf Patel and Yusuf Patel hail from Gujarat, Zaheer Khan has represented Baroda in domestic cricket tournaments.

Advani said that Hussain's "excellent speech" cited numerous statistics contrasting the prosperity of Muslims in the BJP-ruled Gujarat with the problems of Muslims elsewhere in the country.

"I understand that when Shahnawaz went for his Friday namaz at the Kasturba Gandhi Marg Mosque, the imam publicly complimented him for his speech and described it as an 'eye-opener'", Advani remarked in his blog.

Referring to the budget session of the parliament that concluded Friday ahead of its original schedule, he said the decision to abandon the examination of demands of grants for various ministries by the parliamentary standing committees "was a big loss".

Now you're lying again:

In a severe indictment of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi for his alleged role in the 2002 post-Godhra massacre, the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) has held that he failed to control the riots in which more than 1200 people were killed. In its 600-page report, accessed by weekly Tehelka, the SIT has indicted Modi on several counts such as taking a partisan stance, discriminatory attitude, failing to condemn the violence, destruction of documents with evidentiary value and shunting out police officers who tried to prevent the riots.
The Supreme Court in April 2009 had asked the SIT headed by former CBI director RK Raghavan to investigate the complaint of Zakia Jafri into the murder of her husband Ehsan Jafri, a former Congress MP who was among the 69 people killed by rioters in Gulberg Society.

The SIT report, dated May 12, 2010, said Modi, despite attacks on Muslims, tried to water down the seriousness of the situation by saying that every action had an equal and opposite reaction. It said Modi’s implied justification of the killings suggested a partisan stance at a critical juncture when the state was badly disturbed by riots.

It also indicted the Gujarat police for “patently shoddy investigations in Naroda Patiya and Gulberg Society massacres cases”. Rioters killed more than 100 people in Naroda Patiya.

In an “extremely controversial” move, the report said Modi placed two ministers Ashok Bhatt and IK Jadeja — whose cellphone records showed they were in touch with rioters — in control rooms of Ahmedabad city police and Gujarat state police during riots with no definite charter, fuelling speculation that they were sent to interfere in police work and give “wrongful” decisions.
