air defence and deterrence not work only by using defensive approach,it works only by using combination of aggressive and defensive approach,if you threat adversary that any attack by them is strongly responded by similar attack then it stops attacks on your territory,ground based air defenses are last line of defense which are good option for targeting missiles and fighter jets who enter airspace after fighter jets escape air to air combat.This problem is not limited to russian air defense but if you place turkish, u.s or israeli air defense alone in Syria they will fail if not used with other elements of airdefense and it is evident after turkish airdefense is destroyed in Libya and failed to down any fighter jet attacking it

1982, Israel Air Force launched a major attack on Syria's SAM systems. In 2 hours, destroyed 30 batteries and around a 100 aircrafts. They jammed ground radars and blinded the aircrafts. Their AAA missiles outranged Syrian ones. Syrian defenses were completely blinded and defenseless. This was nearly 40 years ago. Syrians haven't really made much headway against electronic warfare tech, while Israel has been constantly innovating and investing in EW tech.

If the S-300 and S-400 were targeted they would have been destroyed at that situation.

because the israeli Jets are often F-35's . they can evade the s-300 or whatever other variant they are. or so it seems
