Why should hafiz-e-Quran students be given extra marks: SC

There is and will always be a need for people who memorise Quran, it has happened to Muslim societies where their history, Quran and everything Islam was snatched from them and destroyed. It is a service to society if there ever arises a need for it.

At some point of time 20 marks were given to students across the board who would participate in NCC program.

And it is not as if universities and medical colleges in Pakistan are strictly adhering to merit based admissions, especially when whole of the education system itself needs to be revamped and modernized.

However, what can be done is test these Hifaz e Quran at time of admission for their ability to remember Quran, as far as I know, memorising Quran and then remembering the same are not a one time activity, it is a never ending process.

Stop making issues out of non issues and this shouldn't be an opportunity to vent out against Mullahs and all the other ills which may not be there because of this.

What is wrong in this?
Look at India. It is not even allowing its minorities to pray on roads.

I am happy Justice Qazi Faiz Isa is having a hearing on this important issue

Instead of lesser important issue like how his wife managed to buy apartments in London

I hope you guys know the punishment in Islam for slandering. Even if it isn’t a slander I hope you know the punishment for exposing sins of one publicly. Don’t slander many innocent hafiz’s on the basis of 1 or 2 bad people you seen

Did we name anyone specifically? Slandering requires naming!

In Pakistan, every sect actively discourages reading translations to understand. They all claim 'gumrah ho jao gay' if you study Quran directly.

Go ask 100 Hafiz from different sects in Pakistan and you'll get the %!

I finished Quran 7 times by age 13 in Pakistan but not once I was taught the meaning! Memorized 30th juz fully (36 Surah) and part of 29th. Even majority of Qaris don't know the meaning!

Same can be said by anything or any subject.

Its the issue of the person not the qualification itself. Dont make your opinion and spread it based on a thin minority.

Then don't give preferential treatment to every person that memorises the Quran, but rather require each of those individuals to meet the same entrance criteria as the rest of the world.

Exposing the truth to prevent an injustice is not slander.

You don't be the judge and jury. It takes years to memorise Quran and 10 marks are nothing compared to that.
Nobody will memorise Quran fir 10 marks. But government gives recognition of their hard work by giving them some preferences in education by some marks.

And an indicator or dedication, hard work and great memory.

On your latter point --- how your perform in medical exams is a more relevant measure of that, particularly for med training placements!
I say this as a believing, practicing Muslim:

Why on earth should there be extra marks for memorizing the Quran for medical college admissions? What is wrong with this country?!

If you want to encourage good character than in a country like Pakistan examples of kindness and charity should be given extra marks.

The fact that Pakistanis are arguing against this just goes to show why our country is in absolute shit, they'd prefer someone who has memorised the Quran over someone who has shown efficient understanding in a field.

As long as religious fanatics like these exist in Pakistan, uncapable of any logical thinking, it will always remain a shit hole.

This is partially the reason why I believe Bangladesh is so far ahead, I've noticed they are nowhere near as fanatical as us

The Supreme Court has raised an important question at a hearing pertaining to a medical college admission case in Karachi. “Why should a hafiz-e-Quran student (a person who memorizes the Holy Quran) be given extra marks for university admissions?” Justice Qazi Faez Isa said on Monday.

A student from the Bolan University of Medical and Health Sciences, Quetta, has petitioned the top court after he being denied admission.
At a hearing on January 8, the petitioner, said that if he is given 20% additional marks for being a hafiz-e-Quran, he would be easily enrolled to the varsity on merit.
In 1987, Pakistan passed a law under which hafiz-e-Quran candidates are awarded 20 extra marks at every level after matriculation.
The apex court has sought clarity on the issue. “How are admissions into medical and other colleges linked to being a hafiz-e-Quran? Why should 20 marks extra be given on this basis?” Justice Isa asked.
“We believe that memorising the Quran is sacred. And it is a plus point when someone wants to become the imam of a mosque or a religious lecturer,” he remarked. “But how can a hafiz-e-Quran be a better doctor?”
The petitioner told the court that it was a complicated subject.

“Why are you scared of Islam? Religion is supposed to make things easier for us,” Justice Isa replied.
The apex court, consequently, dismissed the petition and decided to hold a separate hearing to discuss the matter. Notices have been issued to the Pakistan Medical Commission and others. “This is an important matter. A decision can be reached after discussion,” the Justice Isa said.

I dislike Faiza with a passion but he is right here

The dirtiest jokes I've heard were from such students, and the proportion of people I've met who are overtly religious have been the most hypocritical in their approach.

Let's leave religiosity to a persons self development, and not introduce extra inducements that places an unfair advantage to such people. They study religion for their own development, it does not require extra marks.

Shouldn't everyone be given extra marks for hobbies they fulfil in personal life.
Especially if they excel in those activities. Someone who is good in sports be given extra points, or read high number of books be given extra marks, or writes poetry in spare time be given extra marks, and so on....

Please let's stay away from hypocrisy.

Most crazy suggestion i have ever heard... Hafiz-e-Quran is a personal qualification for oneself being - nothing more or less.

By this logic - should we give extra points to candidates who failed the required standard through tests to become an airline pilot because they are Hafiz-e-Quran??

How about Astronauts while we are at it ?

This is nonsense and should be thrown out immediately..

Study the Hadith on Hifz. Reward for parents and the Hafiz are conditional upon IMPLEMENTATION of!

99.9% of Hafiz in Pakistan don't even know the meaning of Ayah they are reciting, implementation is a distant dream!

BTW, robber of our house who grabbed the women with knife over the neck was a jahil Hafiz! Had he understood what he had memorised and implemented in his life, he would have never committed such an act! Memorising WITHOUT understanding and implementing is NOTHING!
You can make your point without generalizing. Anyone can come up with anecdotal evidence to support pretty much any argument.

It's a chartered accountant who drove our economy to the ground, swindled the country, and is hiding in the UK. It's an MBA from Wharton who is an accomplice of a convicted fugitive. It was an Oxford graduate who allowed her husband to rob the country under her watch.
