I have a,question regarding Heer Ranjha.Some 'jhangus' in India consider that Heer and Ranjha,were Hindu Jatts.In Waris Shah's Heer Ranjha,they are muslims. What is the truth?

Heer-Ranjha were always known as muslim jats. First heer was written by hindu punjabi poet Damudar Das Arora. Basically happy ending with Heer-Ranjha going to haj after marriage. But Heer is famous because of Waris Shah who gave it tragic ending and wrote in unparrarel punjabi poetry. Waris Shah is considered greatest punjabi poet ever.
